Rambling Jack

鈥淩ambling Jack鈥攚hat鈥檚 that?鈥
鈥淎 novel. Novella, I guess.鈥
鈥淵eah, it looks short. What is it, a hundred pages?鈥
鈥淪orta. It鈥檚 a duel language book, so really, only about… 50 pages total.鈥
鈥50 pages?鈥
鈥淚ncluding illustrations.鈥
鈥淎nd this鈥攚hat is it鈥 Dalkey Archive鈥攖hey want 14 bucks for a 50 page book?
鈥淚t is, but the book is good. What does it matter how long it is if it鈥檚 a good read?鈥
鈥淚 guess. So is it?
鈥淎 good read?鈥
鈥淚t is. Oh yeah.鈥
鈥淩ambling, eh? Sounds like fun.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 not rambling like a romantic wayward hobo boxcar type of rambling, though.鈥
鈥淣o? Too bad.鈥
鈥淏ut it鈥檚 good. Rambling, in this case, means rambling imagination.
鈥淭he protagonist. He鈥檚 an old guy and his mind rambles and we get to read about it.鈥
鈥淪ounds confusing.鈥
鈥淣o, no, the prose is really crisp and clear.鈥
鈥淲hat鈥檚 this other language?
It鈥檚 2015 for Christ鈥檚 sake.鈥
鈥淎nd this Irish, that鈥檚 what it鈥檚 written in?鈥
鈥淵eah, but the translator, Katherine Duffy, she does a great job.鈥
鈥淎lright, so this is an old Irish guy, this Rambling Jack.鈥
鈥淵es. Jack. He鈥檚 Irish. A gifted signer. Knows his old songs and all that.
鈥淎 few, but it鈥檚 mainly a story about an aisling.鈥
鈥淎 what?鈥
鈥淎isling. An Irish genre; a poetic technique from, like, the 17th century.鈥
鈥17th century鈥 oh god.鈥
鈥淣o, it鈥檚 pretty amazing stuff. An aisling is a like a dream, a vision, usually of a girl.
鈥淎nd, in many cases, a young, beautiful girl.鈥
鈥淕etting more interesting.鈥
鈥淭hat鈥檚 what happens to Jack.鈥
鈥淗e meets a young girl?鈥
鈥淪ort of鈥攈e has memories of a girl, but it might also be a woman he used to love.鈥
鈥淲ait鈥攖his is a romance?鈥
鈥淲ell, it鈥檚 pretty sappy at times. Jack loved a woman and it didn鈥檛 end well.
I don鈥檛 think we鈥檙e supposed to know the whole story.鈥
鈥淒amn writers with their games.鈥
鈥淲ell, isn鈥檛 that better? I like not being spoon fed details. Makes me work a bit.鈥
鈥淚 guess.鈥
鈥淎nyway, the young aisling could be the granddaughter of Jack鈥檚 old love.
鈥淥r maybe she鈥檚 a dream of the woman he loved appearing as a young girl.鈥
鈥淪o it鈥檚 all a dream, like in a soap opera?鈥
鈥淪orta. It鈥檚 a dream and it鈥檚 strange and nothing seems concrete, but it works.鈥
鈥淪o this Jack鈥 does he鈥 you know. With the young girl?鈥
鈥淟et鈥檚 not get into that鈥攖he book is really bigger than that.鈥
鈥淏igger? It鈥檚 all of 50 pages.
鈥淣ot long, but big. And strange. And, well, kinda beautiful.鈥
鈥淚 dunno鈥 There鈥檚 a new Franzen book. That鈥檚, like, 500 pages.鈥
鈥淪ure, but there鈥檚 a lot to be said about a writer who can evoke something interesting in a small space as opposed to a large, bombastic novel with a lot of fat on it.鈥
鈥淚 guess. Still, sounds a little odd.鈥
鈥淵eah well鈥攍ife鈥檚 too short to not read odd books.鈥
