Chad's Top 10 Stories
The other week, Paul Vidich, who I met in Sozopol, Bulgaria and who runs the very cool asked me to contribute to their feature.
As it says in the introduction to I gave it my “best shot.”
Here are a few of the stories I chose:
1. “Continuity of Parks,鈥 Julio Cort谩zar 鈥 Kind of have to make this number 1, since it was the first story I read in Spanish that totally blew my mind . . . And created a life-long passion for Cort谩zar.
3. “Entropy,鈥 Thomas Pynchon 鈥 I love Pynchon so much, I鈥檇 tattoo him on my arm. His stories may be so-so, but his comments about women鈥檚 hair are brilliant: 鈥淚 will spare everybody a detailed discussion of all the over-writing that occurs in these stories, except to mention how distressed I am at the number of tendrils that keep showing up. I still don鈥檛 even know for sure what a tendril is.鈥
6. “Her Sense of Timing,鈥 Stanley Elkin 鈥 This is one of those stories that鈥檚 hilarious, since it鈥檚 not happening to you. Watching a disabled man struggle to host a surreally destructive party on the same day his wife leaves him has never been so hysterical.
10. 鈥淭he Dinosaur,鈥 Augusto Monterroso 鈥 So, I鈥檒l just give you this whole story rather than try and describe it: 鈥淲hen [s]he awoke, the dinosaur was still there.” That鈥檚 it, and that鈥檚 brilliant.
Again, you can read them all and can download the awesome
