As Attending Veterinarian, Executive Director of Animal Resources, and Professor in the Departments of Comparative Medicine and Environmental Medicine at the URochester School of Medicine &amp; Dentistry, Wyatt has advanced biomedical research, environmental restoration, and global conservation\u2014always guided by his belief that human, animal, and ecosystem health are deeply interconnected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Career Built on Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wyatt arrived in Rochester in 1982 as a young veterinarian beginning a residency in research and wildlife medicine. Over the years, he built one of the nation\u2019s most respected animal research programs\u2014one known for scientific excellence and compassionate care. In 1995, he became the first veterinarian to earn a master\u2019s in public health from the University, deepening his focus on how environmental and animal health influence human well-being.<\/p>\n<p>That combination of expertise and vision quickly translated into institution-wide impact. His leadership strengthened the animal research infrastructure\u2014from daily operations to long-term planning\u2014ensuring investigators had the support, expertise, and environment they needed to pursue complex scientific questions. His collaborative, solution-oriented approach reinforced that foundation and modeled the principles of team science long before they became a formal institutional priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeff\u2019s impact on our institutional research enterprise, on the Rochester community\u2014and even globally\u2014can\u2019t be overstated,&#8221; said Vice President for Research Steve Dewhurst, PhD. &#8220;Animal models touch a majority of scientific work happening at this institution, and Jeff made that possible\u2014not only by ensuring the highest standards of care, but also by helping our investigators in myriad ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19782 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-2048x1363.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1920x1278.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1250x833.jpg 1250w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-660x440.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Colleagues who worked closely with Wyatt over the decades describe him as a steady, strategic leader whose guidance shaped both teams and individuals. Diane Moorman-White, a longtime veterinarian on the Animal Resources team, says \u201cHis ability to navigate complex situations, mentor staff, and solve problems with creativity and calm had a lasting influence on the department and the broader University community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That same systems-level perspective guided his work beyond the Medical Center. His vision linked human, animal, and environmental health, leading to decades of research connecting ecosystem quality and community well-being. His work on the Genesee River and Great Lakes ecosystems helped reveal how wildlife can serve as indicators of environmental recovery. Through projects such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/senecaparkzoo.org\/sturgeon\/\">Lake Sturgeon Restoration Program<\/a>, his team demonstrated measurable improvements in water quality and aquatic wildlife\u2014successes that contributed to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/great-lakes-aocs\/rochester-embayment-aoc-delisted\">delisting of the Rochester Embayment<\/a> as an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Area of Concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother Nature is so resilient,\u201d Wyatt said in a November 2024 interview for <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TO7xEMei7s8?si=d1Zw_kk-nFEGXMY1\"><em>The Next Step Podcast<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe pollution stopped, and she\u2019s cleaning up the river as long as we give her the opportunity to do so. His two decades of work in Borneo and Madagascar, the world\u2019s third and fourth largest islands, helped protect critically endangered orangutans and lemurs by partnering with local co<span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">mmunities to provide healthcare and sustainable livelihoods\u2014an approach credited with saving thousands of animals and transforming public health outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through EPA and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation-funded projects, h<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8409905 BCX0\">e\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8409905 BCX0\">\u00a0worked alongside Rochester communities from\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8409905 BCX0\">different cultural<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8409905 BCX0\">\u00a0backgrounds to raise awareness<\/span> about safe fish consumption and promote healthier choices for families who rely on local waterways for food.<\/p>\n<p>Although retiring from his University role, Wyatt will continue his mission globally and locally through partnerships with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinharmony.org\/\">Health in Harmony<\/a> and NYS Environmental Justice programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWelcoming Pradeep Dumpala<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Wyatt co<span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">ncludes his distinguished career, SMD welcomes Pradeep Dumpala, DVM, PhD, DACLAM, previously associate director in the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources at SUNY Upstate Medical University, to lead the University\u2019s animal care and use program<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-19752 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/university-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pradeep-1-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>A board-certified laboratory animal medicine specialist, Dumpala brings more than 15 years of leadership in animal research operations, accreditation, and regulatory compliance. Colleagues who have worked with him point to his strong management skills, his experience running complex facilities, and his ability to build trusting relationships across teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was clear he was very good at making connections between people,\u201d says Craig Morrell,<\/p>\n<p>DVM, PhD, professor in the Department of Medicine and head of the search committee. \u201cHe finds a path to make something work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat drew me to Rochester is its deeply collaborative and forward-thinking spirit,\u201d Dumpala says. \u201cI\u2019m inspired by the University\u2019s commitment to scientific excellence and animal welfare and eager to contribute to its research mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Legacy of Hope<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wyatt\u2019s career reminds us that science and stewardship go hand in hand.
