2026-2027 Counselors In Residence Recruitment

The University Counseling Center, in collaboration with the Office for Residential Life & Housing Services and the Department of Public Safety, is recruiting Counselors in Residence (CIRs) at the URochester to support residential student mental health. The CIRs will serve as a resource for residential students providing both overnight response to students in crisis and weekday evening drop-in hours for help connecting with services on or off campus. The CIRs will also operate as consultants for Residential Life staff and assist with more complex residential student issues brought to the staff’s attention. Excellent opportunity for graduate students interested in mental health, healthcare, or higher education to gain experience with mental health responses, crisis management, and mental health promotion practices.

The ideal Counselor in Residence candidate needs to be a collaborative, student-oriented individual. A commitment to cultural humility and an understanding of student development is a must for this role. Equity, inclusion, and care will be pervasive in the actions of the CIR in their day-to-day work. There is one opening for the 2026-2027 school year in our team of five CIRs, and the position will be working no more than 15 hours per week, primarily overnight and on weekends. Extensive training will be provided prior to beginning work.

Required Qualifications

  • Current graduate student in good standing at the URochester
  • Demonstrated understanding of crisis management, mental health, and wellness
  • Ability to respond to the complex nature of student mental health needs in a timely manner
  • Availability for evening and overnight shift and weekend work; occasional daytime hours will be needed for training, department meetings, and weekly meetings with supervisory staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a mental health related field
  • Experience in helping college students exhibit help-seeking behaviors, and disseminating student knowledge of campus mental health resources
  • Experience working with communities of folks who have experienced forms of oppression (e.g., people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, low-income, religious minorities, people with disabilities, etc.)
  • Experience working in higher education and/or with college students around crisis, mental health, and/or wellness
  • Experience working with sexual assault survivors/victims
  • Experience with case management
  • Experience working with law enforcement agencies
  • Familiarity with civil rights laws including Title IX, federal and state laws and policies
  • Experience in helping college students exhibit help-seeking behaviors, and disseminating knowledge of campus mental health resources

Compensation:

Successful candidates will be on contract for 10 months and will be able to continue in their position following an annual performance review. Each CIR will receive a free unfurnished apartment in University Housing, a partial meal plan, and a $7,500 stipend, paid bi-weekly. A car is required.
