We want to acknowledge the hard work and obligations of this busy time in the semester, where events close to home and in the United States can intensify our existing stress and bring more pain, grief, and rage to our community. The school and neighborhood violence against children and adults, oppressive policies targeting trans and gender expansive children and adults are not a reflection of this campus, of the health and mental health values of the University Counseling Center and the University Health Service. We are still here for you.

UHS is discontinuing the provision of health care services to University retirees, employees, and their family members. This decision was made after careful evaluation of our health services. We are most strongly positioned to provide adolescent and young-adult focused comprehensive care and need to prioritize our resources to serve our student and trainee populations. Additionally, UHS and UR Medicine use different patient data systems, which can create challenges when it comes to coordinating adult care across multiple providers.

UHS leaders are working with the to ensure a smooth transition and help patients establish care with providers in the Rochester area. Alternatively, patients can find a new provider independently by contacting the Primary Care Physician Referral Line ((585) 784-8891).

Further information will be provided.

Do you have a question about sexual health? Submit your own question to our Sexpert here!

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, and it is always best to talk with your primary care provider if you are concerned about your health. To make an appointment with your primary care provider at UHS, call (585) 275-2662.

Submission: I’m a male and tired of manual masturbation. Can you suggest good and affordable lube and sex toys for men/people assigned male at birth?

Thank you for your question! The Health Promotion Office provides lube (and other safer sex supplies) for FREE at these locations:

  1. University Health Services – Wellness on Demand vending machine (University Health Services entry), 1st Floor Waiting Room, 4th Floor Health Promotion Office
  2. Wilson Commons – Campus Information Center
  3. Douglass Commons – Burgett Intercultural Center
  4. Goergen Athletic Center – Locker rooms
  5. Delivered directly to your campus mailbox by ordering via Safe Sex Express here
  6. Lube can also be purchased at CVS, Wegmans, Walmart, and Amazon.

There are thousands of different sex toys on the market with different functions and features. Here are a few to explore:

  1. Sleeves – soft tubes that the penis is inserted into. Sleeves can have a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures to provide a variety of sensations. Some also have vibrating and suctioning features.
  2. Pumps – devices that create suction around the penis, clitoris, vulva, or nipples. This drives blood flow to the area, increasing sensation and sensitivity.
  3. Vibrators – objects that vibrate or buzz to stimulate the genitals. Vibes come in all shapes and sizes and can be used on external genitals or inserted in the vagina or anus.
  4. Dildos – object that is inserted into the vagina, anus, or mouth. Some dildos are designed to look like a penis, while others are more abstract. Dildos are made in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Curved dildos can stimulate the prostate in people assigned male at birth and the g-spot in people assigned female at birth.

Depending on the sex toy you’re looking for, you may be able to purchase one in a store or order online. Here are a few places to start:

  1. Spencer’s – locations at the Greece Ridge Mall and Eastview Mall
  2. Show World – locations in Greece and Henrietta
  3. Medusa’s Adult Boutique – 226 Monroe Ave, Rochester NY 14607
  4. Some toys can be found at stores like Walmart and Target
  5. Amazon

A few more things to keep in mind when experimenting with sex toys:

  1. Read the care instructions that come with the toy to determine the best way to clean and store your toy. Generally, mild soap and warm water is a good way to clean most, but not all, toys.
  2. Review toy directions for information on how to safely use the toy. Some toys, like pumps, should only be used for a short period of time.
  3. Silicone-based lubricants can react with silicone toys and cause them to break down. Water-based lubricants are the best to use with toys.
  4. If you’re inserting a sex toy into your anus, make sure it has a flared base to keep it from going all the way in.
  5. If you’re sharing a sex toy with your partner, using condoms on the toy can help protect you both from STIs.

If you have more questions about sex toys, masturbation, or your sexual health, make an appointment at UHS by calling 585-275-2662 or scheduling online via UHSConnect.

UR Employees: Faculty & Staff

The flu vaccine is covered in full for all active members of the UR student health insurance plan (Aetna), the UR Employee Health Plan (Excellus) and generally covered in full by most private insurance plans. Contact your insurance plan directly for specific network and coverage details. Flu vaccines offer the best and safest way to prevent the spread of the illness and getting vaccinated does not cause the flu.

Employees can get their flu vaccine in one of the following ways:

  • Pharmacy walk-ins. This may be the easiest way for a lot of faculty and staff. With most health insurance plans, there is no cost when you visit a pharmacy such as CVS, Walgreens, or Wegmans to receive a flu vaccine, and no appointment is needed.
  • Visit your primary care doctor. Your family doctor should have the vaccine available for you and your family. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone ages 6 months or older, and a high-dose vaccine may be available to individuals ages 65 years or older.

Save the date for this year’s flu vaccine clinics!

On Friday, October 25, University Health Service (UHS) will host a flu vaccine clinic for students from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Eastman School of Music Student Living Center. We’ll be in the Staff Dining Hall.

Students scheduling an appointment for a flu shot should do so through UHSConnect:

  • Log in to .
  • Click on Appt. Scheduling and then Schedule Appt. to schedule an appointment. You will first need to read and accept the Terms of Service.
  • Select UHS-Vaccine Clinic in the Office Location field.

  • Click on Flu Vaccine Clinic – EASTMAN SCHOOL as the Reason for Appointment.
  • Click Search.
  • Schedule your appointment by clicking on one of the appointments listed on the right side of the screen.
  • Click Confirm to schedule your appointment.

The flu vaccine is covered in full for all active members of the UR student health insurance plan (Aetna) and generally covered in full by most private insurance plans. Contact your insurance plan directly for specific coverage details. Flu vaccines offer the best and safest way to prevent the spread of the illness and getting vaccinated does not cause the flu. Some people may react with a sore arm or feel achy after the vaccine, but this is much better than coming down with influenza.

Getting a flu vaccine is one way that you can protect your own good health and that of the University community in the coming months. Other important ways to prevent illness are to wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use and wash your hands. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, get regular activity, and rest.
