At approximately 12:30 p.m. this afternoon, a University undergraduate was the victim of an attempted robbery near the Towers Road side of the Hill Court Bridge. The student was approached by three individuals who attempted to take the victim’s backpack and then pushed them to the ground. A fellow student witnessed the incident and called DPS for assistance. The three individuals fled the area but were quickly located by DPS in the area of the tennis courts along Wilson Boulevard. The student was not injured and nothing was taken. The individuals are all juveniles and were released to the custody of their parents or the Rochester Police Department.

Anyone who may be a witness to this crime or has additional information is encouraged to contact Public Safety at 585-275-3333

Safety Tips

  • If you feel you or others are in danger, immediately call DPS at 585-275-3333, or if off-campus call 911.
  • Be alert to your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, tell someone, avoid the person or leave the area.
  • Walk-in pairs or with trusted companions, especially at night or in remote areas.  At night, walk on the lighted paths and sidewalks that have access to the Blue Light phones.

Early this morning at about 12:30 a.m., a University undergraduate student was the victim of an attempted sexual assault. The incident occurred in the Genesee Valley Park path area south of the Staybridge hotel. A passing witness alerted a Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer of someone screaming in the area, DPS located the student, who reported that an unknown male came up from behind and attempted to sexually assault them, but after a struggle, the suspect fled the area. DPS began a search of the area and located a person who matched a description given by the student and witness. The suspect who has no University affiliation was positively identified by the student, arrested, and remains in custody.

The Department of Public Safety and the Rochester Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone who may be a witness to this crime or has additional information is encouraged to contact Public Safety at 5852753333

On the evening of 5/24/21 at approximately 10:30 p.m. an undergraduate student was the victim of a strong arm robbery. The robbery occurred across from the Riverview residence hall, at the corner of Barton Street and South Plymouth Avenue. The student was approached from behind by two unknown males who stole the victim’s wallet, cell phone and keys. The student was struck in the face and suffered a minor injury.  There were no weapons used or displayed and the males left the area in a black sedan. The Rochester Police are investigating.

At approximately 3:00 am on 5/22/21, DPS received a blue light emergency phone call from an unaffiliated person (not a UR community member) stating that they had just been robbed while sitting in their parked car on Swan Street near the RG&E substation. Four juveniles on bicycles approached the victim’s car, opened the car doors, demanded money, and struck the victim several times in the face. There were no weapons displayed. The juveniles then got onto their bikes and rode westbound on East Main Street.

The Rochester Police and an ambulance responded to the scene. The Rochester Police indicated that there had been similar incidents of this type in the city overnight and were continuing to investigate.
