Program Goals and Objectives<\/h2>\n

Orthodontics Residency Program<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Develop an individual with exceptional expertise in the biology and clinical practice of orthodontics. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Mentor individuals capable of critically evaluating current research information and determining potential application to clinical principles and procedures. Develop some experience in clinical research methodology and provide some basic training in clinical research. Students are obligated to conduct research projects and to present research reports to their peers.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Provide the opportunity to learn from,to communicate with, and to be constructively helpful to other professional disciplines.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Make individuals cognizant of limitations imposed by genetic predispositions and craniofacial growth discrepancies.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Pediatric Residency Program<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. To provide residents with an educational experience that meets or exceeds CODA standards for advanced Educational Programs in Pediatric Dentistry.<\/li>\n
    2. To prepare graduates for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification process.<\/li>\n
    3. To prepare graduates for a career in Pediatric Dentistry with the potential for assuming leadership roles within the profession.<\/li>\n
    4. To produce a Pediatric Dentist competent in the prevention and management of orofacial health problems as defined by the scope of Pediatric Dentistry practice.<\/li>\n
    5. To stimulate the resident’s desire for creativity, critical thinking and inquiry necessary for the advancement of Pediatric Dentistry.<\/li>\n
    6. To sensitize residents to the problems associated with access to health care for children living in poverty and populations with special health care needs.<\/li>\n
    7. To train residents in becoming medical professionals who embody the ICARE values set forth by the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ Medical Center: Inclusiveness, Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      AEGD Residency Program<\/h3>\n
        \n
      1. The two-year residents are expected to fulfill the postgraduate requirements of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ Eastman Institute for Oral Health and the American Dental Association\u2019s Commission on Dental Education through the accreditation requirements.<\/li>\n
      2. To attract and educate the future leaders of dental practice, dental education, dental research, and community service.<\/li>\n
      3. To stimulate the resident\u2019s interest and prepare the graduate for a possible career in academics and research.<\/li>\n
      4. Prepare the graduate to act as primary care provider for individuals and groups of patients. This includes providing emergency and multi-disciplinary comprehensive oral health care, providing patient focused care that is coordinated by the General Practitioner, and directing health promotion and disease prevention activities.<\/li>\n
      5. Plan and provide multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients with special needs.<\/li>\n
      6. Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments within interdisciplinary health care teams.<\/li>\n
      7. Apply scientific principles to learning and oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidence of outcome-based clinical decision-making, and technology-based information retrieval system.<\/li>\n
      8. Utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient centered care, adaptability and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.<\/li>\n
      9. Understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service.<\/li>\n
      10. Manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvements that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Periodontics Residency Program<\/h3>\n
          \n
        1. Provide comprehensive preparation of competent residents to practice periodontics.<\/li>\n
        2. To provide comprehensive periodontal care for a variety of patients and periodontal diseases.<\/li>\n
        3. Prepare residents to successfully complete certification by the American Board of Periodontology.<\/li>\n
        4. Train residents to be teachers.<\/li>\n
        5. Provide residents with the opportunity to do research and obtain postgraduate degrees, to the extent that they desire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Prosthodontics Residency Program<\/h3>\n
            \n
          1. To provide competency in managing and treating a wide scope of clinical conditions for partially edentulous, completely edentulous and dentate patients.<\/li>\n
          2. To develop clinical competency in the application of principles associated with fixed prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, and removable prosthodontics.<\/li>\n
          3. To provide competency in the application of evidence-based dentistry.<\/li>\n
          4. To provide competency in the application of ethical principles and decision making in the students\u2019 clinical and research environment.<\/li>\n
          5. To develop competency in the application of esthetic to Prosthodontics.<\/li>\n
          6. To develop competency in the surgical placement (and related surgical procedures) and restoration of dental implants.<\/li>\n
          7. To provide competency in the selection and application of biomaterials.<\/li>\n
          8. To develop an in-depth knowledge and competency for the utilization of digital dentistry workflows.<\/li>\n
          9. To develop competency in the prosthodontic management of the patients with temporomandibular disorders and \/or orofacial pain.<\/li>\n
          10. To provide experience with patients requiring maxillofacial prosthetic care.<\/li>\n
          11. To provide relevant didactic course content in the Basic Sciences, Prosthodontic and related disciplines which will establish a firm foundation to base clinical diagnosis and treatment in prosthodontics.<\/li>\n
          12. To develop competency and a knowledge base sufficient to challenge The American Board of Prosthodontists examination.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Residency Program<\/h3>\n
              \n
            1. Proficient in-patient evaluation and management<\/li>\n
            2. Proficient in dentoalveolar surgery<\/li>\n
            3. Proficient in ambulatory anesthesia and sedation<\/li>\n
            4. Competent in orthognathic surgery<\/li>\n
            5. Competent in TMJ surgery<\/li>\n
            6. Competent in oncologic surgery including major resections<\/li>\n
            7. Competent in reconstructive surgery<\/li>\n
            8. Competent in facial trauma surgery<\/li>\n
            9. Competent in facial cosmetic surgery<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Orofacial Pain Residency Program<\/h3>\n
                \n
              1. Provide education in orofacial pain at the level beyond predoctoral education relating to the basic mechanisms and the anatomic, physiologic, neurologic, vascular, behavioral, and psychosocial aspects of orofacial pain.<\/li>\n
              2. Plan and provide interdisciplinary\/multidisciplinary health care for a wide variety of patients with orofacial pain.<\/li>\n
              3. Interact with other health care professionals in order to facilitate the patients\u2019 total health care.<\/li>\n
              4. Manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvement that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment.<\/li>\n
              5. Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments and within interdisciplinary multidisciplinary health care teams.<\/li>\n

                MS Program<\/h3>\n
                  \n
                1. Display independent critical thinking in the evaluation of scientific literature and the ability to incorporate novel information from this analysis into the clinical setting.<\/li>\n
                2. Demonstrate knowledge of the dental clinical sciences, scientific methodology, and research design.<\/li>\n
                3. Conduct dental clinical research.<\/li>\n
                4. Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the design and implementation of evidence-based care and treatment of dental disorders.<\/li>\n
