{"id":77782,"date":"2014-11-05T22:12:20","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T03:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=77782"},"modified":"2015-07-27T14:09:42","modified_gmt":"2015-07-27T18:09:42","slug":"2014-polish-film-festival-marks-polands-move-toward-democracy-77782","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/2014-polish-film-festival-marks-polands-move-toward-democracy-77782\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 Polish Film Festival marks Poland\u2019s move toward democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Mighty Angel runs during the Polish Film Festival on Sunday, November 9.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em>The Skalny Center, a festival co-sponsor, celebrates its 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary <\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This year\u2019s Polish Film Festival marks Eastern Europe\u2019s move toward freedom, led, in part, by the Solidarity Trade Union that emerged from the Gdansk Shipyard in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The Polish Film Festival begins Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 pm with <em>Walesa: Man of Hope<\/em>, the story of how iron worker Lech Walesa\u2014the leader of Solidarity\u2014guided millions of Poles from more than four decades of Communist rule, social upheaval and martial law, ultimately gaining the first free elections in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe festival plays an important role in popularizing Polish culture, not only for people with Polish roots, but for the entire Rochester community and Upstate New York,\u201d said festival organizer Bozena Sobolewska, administrative assistant at the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SlrjOAe1-mQ\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Life Feels Good<\/em> (to be shown Nov. 7 at 7:00 pm) is a heartbreaking and humorous story of a romantic, good-natured man with cerebral palsy who wants to be understood by his family and friends. The film has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix, Public Award, and Ecumenical Prize at the International Film Festival in Montreal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/91011473\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/91011473\">LIFE FEELS GOOD (Poland, 2013), dir. Trailer.<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/user16696450\">Polish Cultural Institute NY<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Venus in Fur<\/em> (Nov. 8, 6:30 pm) is the latest film by master filmmaker Roman Polanski. It\u2019s based on the Tony Award-winning play by David Ives about a writer-director who becomes obsessed with an actress who auditions for a part.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q1LZ6JoUkJc\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Word<\/em> (Nov. 8 at 8:30 pm) is a tale of manipulated revenge involving teenagers who are driven by their na\u00efve passions. The film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with director Anna Kazejak.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6m4Ygg8d4ns\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Mighty Angel<\/em> (Nov. 9, 3:00 pm) is based on Jerzy Plich\u2019s novel of the same name, which won the NIKE Literary Award in 2011. It\u2019s the story of a writer and heavy drinker caught between hope and despair, when he finds salvation in the reciprocated love of a woman.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2-DBCZ9C1wQ\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Ida<\/em> (Nov. 9, 7:00 pm) is a film set in 1962 Poland. It\u2019s the story of an orphan, named Anna, who discovers her Jewish identity shortly before taking her vows at a convent. The film explores both national and personal identity, as well as the need for belief in a bewildering world. The feature will be followed by a question-and-answer session with actress Agata Trzebuchowska.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oXhCaVqB0x0\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The festival winds up with <em>One Way Ticket to the Moon <\/em>(Nov. 10, 7:00 pm), a tale of two brothers taking a road trip, as the older of the two prepares his sibling for service in the Polish navy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SeA3-joNPXc?list=PLxdP2NPjx5Onk8kSgT5Bm5joVLDsslUNl\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s Polish Film Festival launches Wednesday night with the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebration of the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, which organizes the annual festival. The Skalny Center, housed within the Department of Political Science at the URochester, brings together students and faculty to study the historical legacy and the current transformations taking place within Central Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is sponsored and supported by the Skalny Center, the Polish Film Institute, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York, the Polish Filmmakers Association, and the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester. Films are shown with English subtitles and are screened at the Little Theatre. Tickets, which can be purchased at the Little Theatre box office, are $9 for regular admission and $7 for students and seniors. Little Theatre Film Society members receive their membership discount.
