Goldman called out to his wife: \u201cYou won\u2019t believe this! I know him! He played in our band!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That band, a highlight of Goldman\u2019s time at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>, hadn\u2019t played together in three decades. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After Gardere caught wind of the CNN sighting, the men reconnected and decided it would be good to get the band back together regularly, even if virtually and without instruments. Living in several states along the East Coast, they diligently show up on Saturday mornings to discuss all things past, present, and future\u2014but mostly the state of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is almost like therapy for us,\u201d says Gardere. \u201cWe have different political views and don\u2019t always agree, but we talk with one another in a respectful manner, and that really should be the blueprint for America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a recent weekend, four of the band\u2019s seven members\u2014the regulars\u2014toggle between being playful and serious. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From a 1975 review in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campustimes.org\/\"><em>Campus Times<\/em><\/a>: \u201cFor those who love to dance the night away, the Stroke gives its audiences enough \u2018bumping\u2019 and \u2018hustling\u2019 type tunes to keep even the most talented New York City disco-goers satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another <em>Campus Times<\/em> article credited Broad Street Stroke with performing \u201ca bit of magic\u201d not on the stage but by bringing different races together. The piece compared the band\u2019s impact to \u201cmixing salt and sugar\u2014the individual grains will not change characteristics, but the mixture will have a new taste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two singers were Black and the other musicians were white,\u201d says Gardere. \u201cThat was a phenomenon at the time on campus. Those \u201970s were a wonderful mix of entertainment, music, energy, positivity, and racial togetherness. We were brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goldman asks if the others can still picture the shock on the audience\u2019s faces during their first gig, dressed in hats and platform shoes, and entertaining with choreographed movements. \u201cWe were just doing our thing,\u201d he says. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like, \u2018We need to make a statement.\u2019 We were doing the music, and that spoke for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their sound was impressive enough to land them a booking on a cruise ship bound for Nassau, Bahamas. The men swap stories about being naive kids back then, when a Genesee beer cost a mere 25 cents. \u201cOur gigs were overflowing and there were a lot of romantic adventures for us on that ship\u2014and I\u2019ll leave it at that,\u201d says Gardere.<\/p>\n<p>Together for two years, Broad Street Stroke practiced at least twice a week in one of the University\u2019s residence towers, after getting official permission to line the walls of an extra room with acoustic tiles. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nowadays musicians can type a song title into a search engine and find sheet music. That would\u2019ve been helpful to the band\u2019s members, none of whom had perfect pitch. Instead, \u201cwe\u2019d be standing around our chintzy little record player, putting that needle down repeatedly\u201d and going back and forth about which chord was the correct one, remembers lead guitarist John Accordino \u201976. \u201cAnd we would do that over and over until we got it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bass guitarist Clint Conley \u201977, who had the best relative pitch in the band, also used the phone\u2019s dial tone as a reference point when tuning instruments to F and A. \u201cWe practiced like crazy, to the detriment of our studies,\u201d says Accordino. \u201cBut we were tight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band members have remained tight in other ways in recent years. Percussionist Louis Gioffre \u201976 lost his wife to lung cancer in 2023. Over the two years she was sick, the men offered support, as did other members of the band who pop in every now and then on Saturday mornings.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is Reggie Washington, a Rochester local who sang in the group. After the Broad Street Stroke years, he became a professional gospel singer and contributed to the recording of two gospel albums. That led him to the ministry. Now a bishop, he called at times to pray with Gioffre\u2019s wife. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other occasional drop-in is Conley, who went on to play bass in the post-punk band <a href=\"http:\/\/missionofburma.com\/\">Mission of Burma<\/a>\u2014recognized as a major influence on alternative rock bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and R.E.M. (The Boston City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/localbuzz\/2009\/10\/sunday_was_officially_declared.html\">decreed<\/a> October 4 \u201cMission of Burma Day\u201d in 2009.) Although he couldn\u2019t make this particular weekly meeting, Conley later says, \u201cI have such affection for these dudes. Locking down a funk groove with these guys was absolutely exhilarating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The men briefly mention seeing one another at the memorial service for Gioffre\u2019s wife\u2014the first time since college that most of them had been together in person. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough reunion,\u201d Gardere says. \u201cIt meant a lot to me that you guys showed up,\u201d Gioffre responds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was never in question,\u201d Goldman assures him.<\/p>\n<p>They take a beat, then shift into a substantial digression about Smitty\u2019s Birdland, later known as Snuffy\u2019s Birdland\u2014the popular barbecue and fried chicken restaurant they\u2019d go to after each show, adrenaline pumping and needing to unwind.<\/p>\n<p>After sharing memories of the dirty plastic water pitchers and \u201chot sauce that was basically disinfectant for your insides,\u201d Goldman brings up how much Gioffre adored Smitty\u2019s macaroni salad\u2014and how Conley made up a short song about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd how did that song go?\u201d Gardere asks, egging on Goldman to sing.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman grins, recollecting how Gioffre would \u201cbecome enraged\u201d by the ditty. \u201cSo, of course,\u201d he says, \u201cthat meant now I was going to sing it with Clint. Lou got the desired effect. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOh, stop it,\u201d Gioffre says, smiling, as everyone else laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s never-ending needling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gardere points out that every Broad Street Stroke member\u2014all \u201csolid, honest, good people\u201d\u2014has had a successful career, which he credits in large part to their Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ education. He has also found it fascinating to watch how each one has remained roughly the same while evolving in his personality.<\/p>\n<p>He paints Goldman, who transformed a family backpack and sports company into an international brand, as the past and present leader of the group. Goldman continues to play the piano \u201cfairly frequently\u201d and sometimes jams at a dinner club. \u201cI would be a liar if I didn\u2019t say it\u2019s still a thrill to play in front of people,\u201d he confesses.<\/p>\n<p>Gardere describes Gioffre, founder of a national service provider to petroleum and clean energy markets, as having \u201ca very quiet strength and humility.\u201d Shortly after graduating college, Gioffre played in the New Wave band the Digits, which \u201crecorded in England at famous studios with famous record producers,\u201d although nothing was released commercially. These days he rents studio space for his drums and \u2028recording gear.<\/p>\n<p>Accordino, a university professor of urban and regional planning, is a \u201cmellow, extremely intellectual person\u201d with an \u201cegalitarian perspective on all things,\u201d according to Gardere. <span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">Accordino played acoustic guitar regularly until a couple of years ago. (Courtesy of Broad Street Stroke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gardere doesn\u2019t leave himself out, admitting to \u201clots of imposter syndrome\u201d both as a musician and across several careers, which required him to learn on the fly. \u201cI was a showman then and I guess still a showman now,\u201d he says. Gardere juggles several professional roles, which include maintaining a private clinical practice and appearing as a therapist on <em>The Real Housewives of Atlanta<\/em> and other TV shows. He also sings with jazz bands.<\/p>\n<p>(A testament to the group\u2019s good-natured banter: When Conley learned of Gardere\u2019s characterization of him, he wrote in an email, \u201cAloof? Aloof? Ha!
