Here are this year\u2019s winners."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>The annual University-wide event encourages Rochester community members to explore the intersection of science, art, and technology.<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>A record 84 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> faculty, students, and staff submitted entries to an annual competition to explore and illuminate the aesthetic beauty that results when science, art, and technology intersect. The winning entries of the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/undergraduate\/art-of-science.html\">Art of Science<\/a> competition were announced during a ceremony in the Carlson Library, where they will be permanently displayed.<\/p>\n<p>Held each spring, the competition is\u00a0sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences\u00a0<\/a>in collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/\">River Campus Libraries<\/a>. Prizes are awarded for the top student submissions and for the People\u2019s Choice Award, which is voted on by members of the Rochester community. This year, the 665 votes submitted resulted in a two-way tie for the People\u2019s Choice Award<\/p>\n<h3>First Place<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-604352 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Flocking-Behavior-370x630.jpg\" alt=\"A single video frame of a small flock of crows flying over Lehigh Valley Trail.\" width=\"370\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Flocking-Behavior-370x630.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Flocking-Behavior-768x1309.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Flocking-Behavior-901x1536.jpg 901w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Flocking-Behavior.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rayleigh Parker, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/pas\/graduate\/requirements.html\">physics PhD<\/a> student, won first place for <em>Flocking Behavior<\/em>. Parker shot video of a small flock of crows passing overhead on the Lehigh Valley Trail in Rochester and then collapsed the video down into a single frame using a script written in Python.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirds engage in flocking behavior that can produce mind-bogglingly complex structures in space and time, but the behavior of each individual bird can be reduced to a (relatively) simple set of rules,\u201d wrote Parker in their submission. \u201cOnly in the aggregate does the structure of the flock emerge. While large flocks of birds such as starlings are the most immediately impressive, smaller flocks, even groups of only three birds, can be just as beautiful if you take the time to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" width=\"50%\" \/>\n<h3>Second Place<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-604402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Pollen-Catapult-438x630.jpg\" alt=\"White and pink Mountain Laurel flowers with a bee and other flowers drawn over the original photograph.\" width=\"438\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Pollen-Catapult-438x630.jpg 438w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Pollen-Catapult-768x1106.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Pollen-Catapult.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/>The runner-up was <em>Pollen Catapult<\/em>, created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/undergraduate\/bmg.html\">molecular genetics<\/a> student Hanna Wang \u201926. Wang took a photo of Mountain Laurel flowers with her phone and used Clip Studio Paint to edit and draw over the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mountain Laurel\u2019s tension-and-release pollen dispersion mechanism is shown through drawings, allowing for visual depiction of the bent stamen alleviating tension to release pollen,\u201d shared Wang. \u201cIt\u2019s fascinating that these beautiful geometrically shaped flowers are secretly tiny pollen catapults.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" width=\"50%\" \/>\n<h3>Third Place<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-604452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Iridescent-Eclipse--630x630.jpg\" alt=\"swirls of color in an orb with a circle of light beside it.\" width=\"630\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Iridescent-Eclipse--630x630.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Iridescent-Eclipse--768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Iridescent-Eclipse-.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/undergraduate\/major.html\">Optical engineering<\/a> student Benjamin Margulies \u201924 received third place for <em>Iridescent Eclipse<\/em>. The \u201cplanet\u201d in the artwork is a soap bubble illuminated by an extended diffuse white light. Its iridescent colors are a product of thin film interference and the striking patterns are fluid dynamics at play. The \u201ceclipse\u201d is a coin illuminated from the rear with a simple flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am glad sight is our most prominent sense,\u201d noted Margulies as part of his submission. \u201cIt is the easiest way in which to see the beauty in the natural world. It also gave us our greatest tool for studying the cosmos. The world of science would be dark if not for the limitless potential of light.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" width=\"50%\" \/>\n<h3>People\u2019s Choice Award (tie)<\/h3>\n<p>The ballots cast for the People\u2019s Choice Award resulted in a two-way tie between Merve Duyar, an ambulatory technician at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/orthopaedics-center.aspx\">UR Medicine Orthopaedics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/undergraduate\/majors.html\">biology<\/a> student Nilima Walunjkar \u201925.<\/p>\n<p>Duyar drew <em>Overview of the Spine<\/em> (below) by drafting a smaller version in a sketchbook and projecting the main figure onto 30\u201d x 22\u201d watercolor paper. Duyar used a mechanical pencil and a mix of soft blends and crosshatching to create depth and detail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-604462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Overview-of-the-Spine-439x630.jpg\" alt=\"drawing of a human spine.\" width=\"439\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Overview-of-the-Spine-439x630.jpg 439w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Overview-of-the-Spine-768x1103.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/art-of-science-Overview-of-the-Spine.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing visual interest and bold lines, my submission brings scientific information and illustration into a learning experience that is also visually appealing,\u201d per Duyar.<\/p>\n<p>Walunjkar created the agar artwork <em>A Yeasty Night<\/em> (below) using four different yeast strains and a pipette on yeast extract-peptone-dextrose. Walunjkar captured the image using a Phenobooth, a colony counter with a camera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-604472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/A-Yeasty-Night--630x444.jpeg\" alt=\"yeast spores arranged in a petri dish.\" width=\"630\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/A-Yeasty-Night--630x444.jpeg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/A-Yeasty-Night--768x541.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/A-Yeasty-Night-.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re only scratching the surface of understanding microbial diversity worldwide,\u201d Walunjkar explained. \u201cEarly taxonomists used morphology to describe diversity in plants and animals, but this approach has limitations with microbes. The sequencing age has ushered in a new era, enabling us to characterize microbial diversity in ways previously impossible by directly examining DNA sequences.
