Institutional Review Board<\/a> (IRB) review is necessary. The IRB ensures that ethical and safe research practices are used when research is conducted with human subjects.<\/p>\n\u201cDr. Kipp Campbell was selected following an extensive national search and brings exceptional passion to her work and extensive experience in the field of human subjects protection, having previously held leadership positions at a complex health organization, as well as at other R1 research institutions,\u201d says Stephen Dewhurst, vice president for research. \u201cShe has outstanding leadership abilities and communication skills, so I\u2019m very excited that she\u2019s joining our University and will be helping to further enhance the University\u2019s ability to engage in human subjects research that is ethical, collaborative, and dedicated to the highest standards.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kipp Campbell brings a wealth of academic and regulatory knowledge to this position with nearly 30 years of IRB experience in both the biomedical and non-biomedical areas. After earning a PhD in human development and family studies from Pennsylvania State University, she undertook a National Institutes of Health\u2013funded postdoctoral fellowship in developmental disabilities at the University of Minnesota, and subsequently served as the IRB administrator at the Children\u2019s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. She was then recruited to Purdue University to serve as the director of its Human Research Protection Program.<\/p>\n
More recently, she served as director of the Office of Human Research Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she oversaw the professional staff responsible for the support of six IRBs. In 2019, she joined MaineHealth\u2019s Research Compliance Office, responsible for providing training and support to clinicians, faculty, and staff in regulatory requirements for scientific research.<\/p>\n
Kipp Campbell additionally received a master\u2019s degree in human development and family studies from Penn State, and a bachelor\u2019s degree in human resources and family studies from the University of Illinois.
