  {"id":592822,"date":"2024-02-13T10:44:43","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T15:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=592822"},"modified":"2026-04-27T14:11:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:11:24","slug":"for-whom-the-bells-toll-greif-siblings-honor-late-father-592822","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/for-whom-the-bells-toll-greif-siblings-honor-late-father-592822\/","title":{"rendered":"For whom the bells toll: Siblings honor late father"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>A bench outside the Goergen Athletic Center stands as a memorial to the man who discovered the University for his three children.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The sun set in the distance as Braden Greif \u201924 and his father, Scott, drove away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> on a warm June evening in 2019. Braden had enjoyed an overnight visit hosted by the varsity football team, and father and son spent hours touring the River Campus. Now, they were heading toward the airport for a flight home to Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discussed how it was, and the people that stood out and made the difference there,\u201d Braden recalls. \u201cThe vibe we got was that winning was a mindset at Rochester, ingrained in every aspect of college life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott then said what both were thinking: \u201cI think this might be the school for you, Braden.\u201d That evening, he told his wife, Michelle, \u201cThere\u2019s something special about that place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braden will graduate in May with a bachelor\u2019s degree in finance. Siblings Nina Greif \u201925 and Hudson Greif \u201927 followed him to Rochester. Nina is majoring in bioethics, and Hudson in health, behavior and society. The three are here with heavy hearts: In June 2021, their father died of colon cancer. He was 53.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was our dad who discovered Rochester,\u201d Nina says. \u201cBut he never got to enjoy seeing us all there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Greif is memorialized with a bench installed outside the Goergen Athletic Center, a gift from friends of the family. The commemorative gold plaque reads:<\/p>\n<p><em>I have fought the good fight<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I have finished the race,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I have kept the faith.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>2 Timothy 4:7<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Scott Greif 1968\u20132021<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cWhen you hear the Bells think of Me\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Close bond helped siblings deal with family tragedy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Braden and Scott visited more than a dozen colleges in New York, Connecticut, Colorado, and Minnesota, seeking a school that offered great academics along with a fun football experience.<\/p>\n<p>They made the 1,500-mile trip to Rochester three times. Each time, Scott was struck by the sound of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mur\/hopeman-memorial-carillon\/index.html\">Hopeman Memorial Carillon<\/a> bells chiming from atop Rush Rhees Library. The bells chime <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westminster_Quarters\">Westminster Quarters<\/a> on the quarter hour and toll once for every new hour.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1745155608&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true&amp;visual=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad loved walking the campus and hearing them,\u201d Braden says. \u201cHe\u2019d say, \u201cI just love those bells.\u2019 He thought they were beautiful and peaceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire family visited in December 2019. \u201cHudson and I were determined to go to the same college as Braden,\u201d Nina says. \u201cThis was an easy decision. We fell in love with the campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braden played wide receiver for Rochester for three years (there were no games in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), while Hudson joined the Yellowjackets last fall. The coaches offered Nina a job videotaping practices and games. She\u2019s also a member of the student organization <a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/bpg\/home\/\">Ballet Performance Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The siblings\u2019 faith has helped them cope with their loss. As members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/urnewman.org\/\">Catholic Newman Community<\/a>, they attend weekly mass at the Interfaith Chapel, while as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/urnewman.org\/groups\/st-sebastian\">St. Sebastian Society<\/a>, they and their fellow Rochester student-athletes perform community service. \u201cOur saying was always \u2018Faith, family, football,\u2019\u201d Braden says. \u201cAfter I got to college, it became \u201cfaith, family, academics, and football.\u201d<\/p>\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_hoxMrORoLY?si=kCL8i7QR4-c-mFEe\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The siblings are close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough bedrooms at our house for each to have their own, but Braden and Hudson choose to share a room,\u201d Michelle says. \u201cAt college, Braden and Nina have rooms across the hall from each other, and Nina keeps an air mattress so Hudson can come over and spend the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina and Hudson had two classes together in the fall and two more this semester.<\/p>\n<p>Rev. Brian C. Cool \u201906W (MS), \u201921W (EdD), director of the Catholic Newman Community, says the Greifs\u2019 bond is extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe devastating loss of Braden\u2019s father was difficult, but his inner strength was remarkable,\u201d Cool says. \u201cWhen Nina arrived, I saw how deeply rooted they are with each other. Welcoming Hudson to campus, it became clearer. The strength they all have is like a three-stranded rope woven together as one. It is incredible. It is rooted in faith and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A dire diagnosis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Scott and Michelle raised their three children in Conroe, 40 miles north of Houston, and sports became an integral part of family life: baseball, basketball, swimming, track, dance\u2014and, of course, football. Scott served as the boys\u2019 Little League coach and president of the varsity football booster club. \u201cHe was at every minor or major event and milestone,\u201d Nina says.<\/p>\n<p>Scott was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2020, Braden\u2019s first semester at Rochester. He started chemotherapy but didn\u2019t tell his children until Braden returned home for winter break. \u201cIt was tough to hear, but he said \u2018I\u2019m going to beat this,\u2019 and we believed him,\u201d Braden says.<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s health worsened in April 2021, when a PET scan revealed the cancer had spread, making surgery necessary. Still, he remained optimistic. \u201cWhen you go for treatment, there\u2019s a bell you can ring when you\u2019re cancer free,\u201d Hudson says. \u201cDad would say, \u2018I\u2019m going to ring that bell one day. God\u2019s not done with me yet.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Scott hospitalized and Michelle by his side, Braden and Hudson attended Nina\u2019s high school graduation ceremony on May 21 and her final dance recital on June 6. Nina chose the Avril Lavigne song \u201cHead above Water\u201d for her solo. \u201cIt\u2019s about pushing through and fighting through hard times,\u201d Nina says.<\/p>\n<p>A friend taped Nina\u2019s performance and sent it to Michelle\u2019s smart phone that evening. \u201cScott, we\u2019ve got the video for Nina\u2019s dance,\u201d Michelle whispered in her husband\u2019s ear. \u201cWe\u2019re going to play it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braden held the phone by his father\u2019s ear. \u201cHe listed to the entire song, and then he passed away,\u201d Michelle says.<\/p>\n<p>Braden spoke to his father through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019m ready to be the rock that you were, but I\u2019m going to make you proud and do my best.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A tribute to a beloved father<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_592952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-592952\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-592952\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GreifFootball.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GreifFootball.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GreifFootball-473x630.jpeg 473w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-592952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Hudson (left) and Braden (right) Greif played on the Rochester varsity football team together this past fall, and Nina served as team videographer. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With Michelle\u2019s blessing, friends of the family raised money to install a bench on the campus Scott discovered. The bench is in front of the Goergen Athletic Center, a fitting location given the role that athletics has played in the family\u2019s bond. \u201cOur kids use that building all the time,\u201d Michelle says, \u201cand you hear the bells when sitting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A dedication ceremony was held September 5, 2021, and the entire football team surprised the family by showing up. \u201cIt was amazing to see how much they cared enough to show up on a Sunday morning,\u201d Hudson says. \u201cMy dad would have loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Football coach Chad Martinovich says the program cares deeply about the siblings. \u201cThey are a special family,\u201d he says. \u201cand they honor their father with the way they live their lives on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The siblings pass the bench every day. Often, they sit on it and wait for the bells to toll. The tranquil sound gives them peace, as it did their father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes us feel closer to him, like we have a piece of him every day,\u201d Braden says. \u201cIt\u2019s a constant reminder that we\u2019re going to be with him some day.
