Stephen Dewhurst has been named vice president for research at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>. An accomplished virologist and HIV researcher, and respected scientific and academic leader who has been serving in the interim role since 2021, Dewhurst has been appointed to this key leadership role by University President Sarah Mangelsdorf, and following Board of Trustees approval. Dewhurst\u2019s appointment is effective immediately and follows a national search. He will also continue to serve as vice dean for research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry<\/a> (SMD), a position he has held since 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so very fortunate to have Steve leading our unified research enterprise,\u201d said Mangelsdorf. \u201cA highly distinguished scientist, scholar, and proven academic leader, he is the right person to help us embark upon our strategic plan and work to enhance our reputation as a consequential global research university. He understands well our unique areas of distinction and sees the real opportunities for growth and innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vice president for research leads the University\u2019s vast research program, which spans disciplines including clinical applications and basic sciences, optics, humanities, social sciences, and more. Dewhurst will continue to facilitate and support partnerships among the University\u2019s many research offices to make thoughtful and strategic investments in centers, labs, institutes, and initiatives. He will also lead efforts to secure increasing levels of sponsored research funding. The vice president for research oversees the Office of the Vice President for Research<\/a>, the Office of Research Projects Administration, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics<\/a>, UR Ventures, the Office of Human Subjects Protection\/Research Subjects Review Board, and the Health Sciences Center for Computational Innovation (HSCCI).<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve Dewhurst is an outstanding colleague, and has been a remarkable thought partner to me,\u201d said Provost David Figlio. \u201cI am certain that his exceptional expertise, his visionary leadership, and his commitment to transdisciplinary collaboration will inspire our research enterprise to even greater success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dewhurst has more than 30 years of experience at the University as both a faculty member and an administrator. In 2013, he was appointed associate vice president for health sciences research to work directly with the senior vice president for research to create and implement a University-wide research strategic plan.<\/p>\n

As vice dean for research at SMD, he advises on strategic planning, core facilities, and funding priorities. He has also taken a lead role in evaluating graduate-level offerings and curriculum and recommended new courses to ensure Rochester students get the best education possible and are trained for a broad range of careers. He also previously served as senior associate dean for basic research at SMD from 2007 to 2009.<\/p>\n

In addition to his administrative roles, Dewhurst is also the Albert and Phyllis Ritterson Professor of Microbiology & Immunology<\/a>, and former department chair. His research focuses on RNA viruses\u2014notably HIV, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2. He co-directs the University\u2019s HIV\/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit<\/a> (CTU)\u2014which conducts HIV vaccine and treatment trials and engages with communities affected by HIV\u2014with long-time collaborator Michael Keefer. He also co-directs, with National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) President Gerard Buckley and NTID\/Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Associate Professor Matt Dye, the Rochester Partnership for Research and Academic Career Training of Deaf Postdoctoral Scholars<\/a>. <\/em>\u00a0This is a unique partnership between UR and NTID\/RIT, and the only award of its kind in the nation.\u00a0 Finally, Dewhurst has received numerous mentoring and teaching awards, including the University\u2019s highest award for graduate education, the William H. Riker University Award for Graduate Teaching.<\/p>\n

Dewhurst joined the Rochester faculty in 1990. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in cellular pathology from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, and a PhD in pathology and microbiology from the University of Nebraska.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
