  {"id":543932,"date":"2022-12-13T10:07:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T15:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=543932"},"modified":"2023-01-04T14:36:52","modified_gmt":"2023-01-04T19:36:52","slug":"new-award-sends-humanities-graduate-students-abroad-543932","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-award-sends-humanities-graduate-students-abroad-543932\/","title":{"rendered":"New award sends humanities graduate students abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Four doctoral candidates will research in archives in a dozen countries.<\/h2>\n<p>Four <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> graduate students\u2014Jeffrey Baron, Bridget Fleming, Elif Karakaya, and Christian de Mouilpied Sancto\u2014are inaugural recipients of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/humanities\/students\/meliora-global-scholars-grants.html\">Meliora Global Scholars grants<\/a>. Offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/humanities\/index.html\">Humanities Center<\/a>, the grants provide doctoral candidates an opportunity to conduct thesis research in archives and communities abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Available to doctoral students in English, history, philosophy, and visual and cultural studies, the awards of $3,000 to $8,000 are intended to help scholars explore \u201cthe interconnected nature of our world, from climate and natural resources to trade and intellectual exchange, in the past as in the present.\u201d The awards also stress the importance of accessing primary and unpublished source material as the \u201cfoundation of building new knowledge and promoting epistemic fidelity in the humanities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/aah\/people\/faculty\/christensen_peter\/index.html\">Peter Christensen<\/a>, the Ani &amp; Mark Gabrellian Director of the Humanities Center, says he is \u201cthrilled\u201d to announce the recipients. \u201cBetween the four of them, they will be covering Europe from east to west, conducting research in Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, Baron, a PhD candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/\">Department of History<\/a>, will conduct research at several archives in Spain to support his dissertation examining Spanish treasure law as it transformed around 1492.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_544142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-544142\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-544142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/baron-files2.jpg\" alt=\"script written on paper with headshot of jeff baron overlayed on top.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/baron-files2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/baron-files2-630x390.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/baron-files2-768x475.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-544142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This document, with \u201cEl Rey\u201d (\u201cThe King\u201d) in big letters, is part of a 1584 legal document from the General Archive of Indies in Seville, Spain, authorizing grave robbing from an ancient tomb in Peru. Jeff Baron found this during a brief trip Seville last summer. The title translates to: &#8220;When I Hear the Word Culture, I Grab the TV Screen.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe legality of treasure excavations both before and after 1492 has left a rich documentary heritage that can provide insights into mechanisms of Spanish bureaucracy that fostered the dismantling of much of the archaeological landscape of both Iberia and pre-Columbian Latin America,\u201d Baron writes in his prospectus. He anticipates the documents will help support his working argument that, \u201crather than a reckless gold frenzy, the Spanish search for wealth in colonial Latin America was overseen by a careful and deliberate process of licensing and legal authorization that evolved out of medieval treasure-hunting practices,\u201d Baron writes.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming, Karakaya, and Sancto are each PhD students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/vcs\/\">Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies<\/a> (VCS).<\/p>\n<p>Fleming studies women\u2019s artistic and curatorial practices in art collectives in the former Yugoslavia during the postwar era. Her current research focuses on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.serbia.com\/students-cultural-center\/\">Student Cultural Center<\/a> (SKC), a collective that formed in 1968 in Belgrade, in present-day Serbia, as a result of the local student protest movement.<\/p>\n<p>She will visit museums and archives and conduct interviews in Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, and Italy to better understand the \u201ckinds of political agency that were both afforded and denied women as a result of working in a predominately male collective,\u201d Fleming writes.<\/p>\n<p>She wants to understand why female leadership at SKC left the center to work for public television in 1980, whether television was a more effective platform for expressing political agency in the public sphere, and what this contrast suggests about &#8220;art\u2019s shifting role in Yugoslavia, especially given its\u00a0unique brand of socialism.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_544172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-544172\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-544172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/elif-collage-1.jpg\" alt=\"handwritten text with inset headshot of Elif Karakaya. \" width=\"1000\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/elif-collage-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/elif-collage-1-630x350.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/elif-collage-1-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-544172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cI am not ordering you to fight, but to die,\u201d Mustafa Kemel told his Turkish soldiers during a decisive battle of the Gallipoli campaign during World War I. Elif Karakaya will examine this book by Etel Adnan, a Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist, whose parents migrated to Beirut after the collapse off the Ottoman Empire.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Karakaya examines the displacement of the Arab, Greek, and Armenian communities that accompanied the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War, and the legacy of that displacement up to today. Her research focuses on \u201chow these immigrants and their second- and third-generation descendants remember and memorialize their former homelands,\u201d Karakaya writes.<\/p>\n<p>She will examine photography collections, books, manuscripts, maps, and sketches, as well as interview artists or their acquaintances in France, Germany, and Greece to study the varied representation of former Ottoman towns in different visual regimes.<\/p>\n<p>Sancto studies the history of environmental sound media in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
