  {"id":537492,"date":"2022-10-17T14:12:46","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T18:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=537492"},"modified":"2022-10-17T14:28:51","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T18:28:51","slug":"seed-funding-reflects-how-data-science-ar-vr-transform-research-at-rochester-537492","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/seed-funding-reflects-how-data-science-ar-vr-transform-research-at-rochester-537492\/","title":{"rendered":"Seed funding reflects how data science, AR\/VR transform research at Rochester"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">The University\u2019s Goergen Institute for Data Science supports collaborative projects across all disciplines.<\/h2>\n<p>Ten projects supported with seed funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/index.html\">Goergen Institute for Data Science<\/a> this year demonstrate how machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented and virtual reality (AR\/VR) are transforming the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> researchers\u2014across all disciplines\u2014address challenging problems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m very excited about the wide range of collaborative projects we are able to support this year,\u201d says Mujdat Cetin, the Robin and Tim Wentworth Director of the institute<em>.<\/em> \u201cThese projects tackle important and timely problems on data science methods and applications, and I am confident they will lead to significant research contributions and attract external funding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The awards, approximately $20,000 each, help researchers generate sufficient proof-of-concept findings to then attract major external funding.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s projects involve collaborations among engineers, computer scientists, a historian, a biostatistician, and experts in brain and cognitive sciences, earth and environmental science, and palliative care. Their projects include a totally new kind of computing platform, new virtual reality technologies to improve doctor-patient conversations and help people overcome color vision deficiency, and machine learning techniques to make it easier for people to add music to their videos and to enhance AR\/VR immersive experiences based on the unique geometry of each user\u2019s anatomy.<\/p>\n<p>The
