  {"id":516142,"date":"2022-03-22T14:25:49","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T18:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=516142"},"modified":"2022-03-24T11:04:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T15:04:12","slug":"laboratory-for-laser-energetics-represented-at-white-house-summit-on-fusion-energy-516142","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/laboratory-for-laser-energetics-represented-at-white-house-summit-on-fusion-energy-516142\/","title":{"rendered":"Laboratory for Laser Energetics represented at White House summit on fusion energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">LLE Director Michael Campbell joined national stakeholders to discuss the development and commercialization of fusion as a safe, clean, reliable energy source.<\/h2>\n<p>A group of leaders in science and industry from across the United States recently gathered at the White House for a summit to discuss how to accelerate the development and commercialization of fusion energy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">Read the Laboratory for Laser Energetics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/index.php\/2022\/03\/22\/white-house-fusion-summit\/\">special release<\/a> to learn more about the summit and the Department of Energy\u2019s fusion energy initiative.<\/div>\n<p>Michael Campbell, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\">Laboratory for Laser Energetics<\/a>, was among the participants at the gathering, held on March 17 and motivated by\u00a0several factors, including recent scientific advances, Congressional support for fusion, and the Biden-Harris administration\u2019s goal to reach net-zero-carbon emissions by 2050. The summit, \u201cDeveloping a Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy,\u201d was hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the US Department of Energy (DOE).<\/p>\n<p>While fusion has not yet been achieved, it has long been viewed as an ideal energy source due to its potential to be a safe, clean, and reliable energy technology. Fusion energy uses the same reaction that powers the stars, including the sun, and is produced by combining atoms to create heavier ones. The DOE plans to launch an agency-wide initiative\u2014facilitated by a new DOE lead fusion coordinator, Scott Hsu, who is currently a program director at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/technologytransitions\/advanced-research-projects-agency-energy\">Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy<\/a> (ARPA-E)\u2014to develop strategies to accelerate the viability of commercial fusion energy in partnership with the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was overwhelmingly strong support and enthusiasm for fusion energy,\u201d Campbell says. \u201cWe expect there will be increasing interest and funding from both private and public sources in the near future. The Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ and LLE are recognized as a center of excellence in the science and technology of inertial fusion that has resulted from the support we have received from the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) and DOE\u2019s Office of Fusion Energy Sciences. As a result, the LLE is well positioned to contribute to the development of fusion energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the early 1970s, scientists have pursued the possibility of using high-power lasers to compress material long enough, at high enough temperatures, to trigger ignition, meaning the resultant output of fusion energy is many times greater than the energy required for ignition. The entire process of compression and ignition, which occurs in nanoseconds, is called inertial confinement fusion (ICF).<\/p>\n<p>The LLE is a leader in direct-drive laser ICF research, collaborating with engineering, physics, and other science faculty on the University\u2019s River Campus, as well as fusion laboratories across the globe.
