  {"id":511762,"date":"2022-02-23T10:54:56","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T15:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=511762"},"modified":"2023-09-30T12:32:53","modified_gmt":"2023-09-30T16:32:53","slug":"hedwig-angry-inch-costumes-glam-rock-theater-511762","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/hedwig-angry-inch-costumes-glam-rock-theater-511762\/","title":{"rendered":"Costume-ready for \u2018fabulously fun\u2019 glam rock theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">A behind-the-scenes photo gallery shows the International Theatre Program gearing up for <em>Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/em>.<\/h2>\n<p>Costumes and makeup take center stage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/theatre\/\">International Theatre Program<\/a>\u2019s production of <em>Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/em>, taking place from February 25 through March 5, 2022, at the Sloan Performing Arts Center on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>\u2019s River Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Obie-award winning off-Broadway rock musical follows a genderqueer wannabe musician\u2014living with a botched gender reassignment operation\u2014embarking on a journey of self-discovery while trailing her rock star love interest around the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fabulously fun show,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/eng\/people\/faculty\/maister_nigel\/index.html\">Nigel Maister<\/a>, the Russell and Ruth Peck Artistic Director for the International Theatre Program. \u201cIt has an extravagance of vision, and it gives students the opportunity to dress up in extraordinary costumes and explore gender identities across the spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students take on more production roles than in past International Theatre Program productions, which have tended to rely on professionals outside of the University. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>START TO FINISH:<\/strong> Jack Bell \u201922, \u201923 (T5) (right) shows off the finished Hedwig costume inspired by the rendering (left) by Jeremy Tjhung, a Rochester-area creator and activist who spent many years working in the New York City fashion world and was a costume designer for the production. Tjhung died in July 2021 of lymphoma. \u201cIn a way, this show is an homage to his work,\u201d says Maister.<\/p>\n<p>Tjhung\u2019s \u201cattention to detail was insane,\u201d says director Christian Couture. For example, the show calls for wigs to be worn by multiple people, and since regular wigs are typically made for the size of females, Tjhung consulted with online tutorials to create their own. Tjhung and Couture were then inspired by Willam, a drag queen made famous in the television show\u00a0<em>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/em>, to create a handmade hairpiece that called for a sheer mesh bucket hat and hair-tied bundles zip-tied into ponytails and using hot glue. \u201cYou\u2019ll see it in the show. It\u2019s ginormous. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>GLAMMED UP:<\/strong> \u201cThe process of costuming has been unlike anything I\u2019ve done,\u201d says Bell, an electrical and computer engineering major from San Francisco, who will spend the 2022\u201323 academic year as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ccas\/undergraduate\/opportunities\/takefive\/index.html\">Take Five Scholar<\/a> pursuing a program in philosophy and government. \u201cIt\u2019s been cool to see the vision come to life from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Says Maister: \u201cThe [costume] designs are handmade with low-fi elements repurposed using craft-intensive methods. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>NEW THREADS:<\/strong> The Sloan Performing Arts Center features a costume shop, in addition to a prop shop, scene shop, conditioning room, and dressing rooms. In the costume shop, located on the venue\u2019s lower level, students have access to new sewing machines and tables, a pin-up wall, mannequins, and cutting tables to create and conceptualize character costumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new costume shop is beautiful,\u201d says Sophia Chima \u201922, \u201923 (T5), a microbiology major. \u201cIt\u2019s tricked out with everything I could possibly imagine. We got new tables, a new wardrobe, and a capsule system for storage, and when I got into the space, it was clean and clear. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>THE LOOK:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe costumes are crazy,\u201d says Cooper Orio \u201923, \u201924 (T5), posing as Hedwig in the Sloan Performing Arts Center\u2019s costume shop.<\/p>\n<p>The New Hampshire native and double major in physics and math steps into one of three Hedwig roles in the show. \u201cHedwig wears polychromatic boots and extravagant wigs without giving too much away for the show. It\u2019s very flashy and over the top, but in a tasteful way,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The role has required Orio to step out of his comfort zone at times. \u201cAt one point, I\u2019m wearing five-inch heels, and that has been the most difficult thing to acclimate to,\u201d he says. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>FINISHING TOUCHES:<\/strong> Orio gets some final touchups from wig designer Kristina Scalone (left), costume associate Samantha Miller (center), and Couture in the costume room.<\/p>\n<p>Couture, the current costume shop manager at the University\u2019s theater program, started his career working at the Broadway costume company of the legendary designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/09\/16\/nyregion\/barbara-matera-dies-at-72-costumer-for-stage-and-screen.html\">Barbara Matera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his role as director of the production, he says: \u201cIt\u2019s the simple, repetitive things that you can teach to the students, watching as they absorb, and then they very quickly they make it their own. They have such a great sense of accomplishment when the character stands up on that stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>If you go to the show &#8230; <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dressing in drag is encouraged. There are shows at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. In addition, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ students can get in free (while supplies last) by presenting their student ID at the box office the night of the show.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a
