{"id":497742,"date":"2021-10-26T10:21:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T14:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=497742"},"modified":"2021-11-05T10:46:35","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T14:46:35","slug":"meet-the-recipients-of-the-2021-goergen-awards-for-teaching-excellence-497742","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/meet-the-recipients-of-the-2021-goergen-awards-for-teaching-excellence-497742\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the recipients of the 2021 Goergen Awards for teaching excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Rochester professors Will Bridges, Jason Middleton, and Elaine Sia will be formally recognized for their exceptional undergraduate teaching on October 28.<\/h2>\n<p>The diversity of subjects in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> undergraduates find exceptional teachers may best be illustrated by this year\u2019s recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ourfaculty\/goergen\/\">Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They teach Japanese literature, film analysis, and biology.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1997 by University Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus Robert Goergen \u201960 and his wife, Pamela, the award recognizes distinctive teaching accomplishments of faculty teaching undergraduates in Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Will Bridges<\/strong>, associate professor of Japanese in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mlc\/\">Department of Modern Languages and Cultures<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jason Middleton<\/strong>, associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/eng\/\">Department of English<\/a> and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/fms\/\">Film and Media Studies Program<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Elaine Sia<\/strong>, professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/\">Department of Biology<\/a> and codirector of the Undergraduate Program in Biology and Medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They\u2019ll be honored on Thursday, October 28 in a ceremony at the Feldman Ballroom in Frederick Douglass Commons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessors Bridges, Middleton, and Sia each embody the kind of innovative pedagogy that we seek to recognize with the Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching,\u201d says Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College. \u201cThis acknowledgement is a reminder to us all of the value our highly creative teachers add to our students\u2019 experience and our College campus community as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nominations come from students, faculty, staff members, and administrators. The winners are chosen by Runner; Gloria Culver, dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\">School of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>; and Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Discover what sets this year\u2019s recipients Innovation and student involvement as teaching tools<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">A fourth-generation teacher with a passion for post-World War II Japanese literature, the associate professor is always searching for innovative ways to reach his students.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;\">\n<p><a at film with a critical eye<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">The associate professor of English and visual and cultural studies lived all over the globe growing up, and developed a love of film at an early age.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/elaine-sia-teaching-the-how-as-well-as-the-what-in-science-497712\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" the \u2018how\u2019 as well as the \u2018what\u2019 in science<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">The biology professor has taught nearly 4,000 undergraduates since joining the University in 2000, including students in the 100-level Genetics, the first demanding course in that
