It was updated on November 19 after the novel was named a winner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Winter in Sokcho<\/em>, written by Elisa Shua Dusapin and translated from the French by Aneesa Abbas Higgins, has won the 2021 National Book Award for Translated Literature.<\/p>\n<p>The novel was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\">Open Letter<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>\u2019s nonprofit literary translation press, one of only a handful of publishing houses dedicated to making world literature accessible to English-language readers. <em>Winter in Sokcho<\/em> is the first of the publisher\u2019s titles to be named a finalist and a winner by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\">National Book Foundation<\/a>, which administers the awards\u2014one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the country since 1950.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five finalists were shortlisted for this year\u2019s awards, with five books each in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People\u2019s Literature. The winners were announced live at the 72nd National Book Awards Ceremony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/awards2021\/\">held online<\/a> on Wednesday, November 17.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/awards-prizes\/national-book-awards-2021\/\">winners of\u00a02021 National Book Awards<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/awards2021\/\">recording of the ceremony<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the novel\u2019s initial designation as a finalist, Chad Post, the director of Open Letter, said, \u201cIt\u2019s a great honor to have a book on the National Book Awards shortlist.\u201d Originally published by Daunt Books in the UK in March 2020, the translation is getting \u201csecond life here in the United States, at a time when readers could fully appreciate the stark beauty of Dusapin and Higgins\u2019s writing,\u201d according to Post.<\/p>\n<p>Set in the eponymous tourist town on the border between South and North Korea, Winter in Sokcho traces the uneasy relationship between a young French Korean woman working as a receptionist in a tired guesthouse and an unexpected visitor: a French cartoonist determined to find inspiration in the desolate landscape.
