The\u00a0International Theatre Program<\/a>\u00a0will present\u00a0Terminal 3<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 a play by playwright and poet Lars Nor\u00e9n\u2014from April 30 through May 2.<\/p>\n

One of Sweden\u2019s most highly regarded playwrights, Nor\u00e9n wrote more than 70 plays that were translated into several languages and performed regularly in Europe before he died of COVID-19 in January.<\/p>\n

Terminal 3<\/em> is a story of two couples, one young and the other older, who come together in a waiting room: the young couple awaiting the birth of their child and the older identifying their child\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a portrait of people at critical junctures in their lives: birth, death and, indeed, in their relationships themselves. It\u2019s a piece that\u2019s both nuanced and subtle,\u201d says Nigel Maister, the Russell and Ruth Peck Artistic Director for the International Theatre Program. \u201cIt\u2019s a moving, slightly surreal, and relies on small gestures rather than dramatic \u2018fireworks.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The production takes on the hybrid nature of the current cultural moment. \u201cWe shot it like a movie, and it was staged partly as a traditional play, but also specifically for the camera,\u201d says Maister, director and designer of the production. \u201cThe piece lends itself to this format because its dreamlike intimacy,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

During the fall 2020 semester, the International Theatre Program produced Nicolai\u00a0Gogol\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>The Government Inspector\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 an entirely online recorded performance that involved technical challenges and afforded creative liberties. According to Maister, this year\u2019s hybrid format is helpful for the student actors to explore acting for the camera and acting for the stage. \u201cI was hoping to give the students a dual experience,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to push the envelope and see what we can do.\u201d
