Doctoral students <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/students\/clark-shellie\/index.html\">Shellie Clark<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/students\/knight_carrie\/index.html\">Carrie Knight<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/students\/davis_lauren\/index.html\">Lauren Davis<\/a>\u00a0are using the University\u2019s extensive, firsthand collections of documents of the family of Frances and William Henry Seward, secretary of state to Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, to conduct that re-evaluation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h2>Seward Video Playlist<\/h2>\n<p>Visit the Seward Family Digital Archive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLQqibrU3vslrpfitex8fJuQosZIEHY-b6\">video playlist<\/a> to view more videos about the Sewards and the origins of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sewardproject.org\">Seward Family Digital Archive Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The archive is a collaboration between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/\">Department of History<\/a> and River Campus Libraries at the URochester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With the help of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/students\/rambold-sarabeth\/index.html\">Sarabeth Rambold<\/a>, a history PhD student and videography manager for the Seward project, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/students-start-fall-semester-with-covid-19-quarantine-447242\/\">Demi Robbins<\/a> \u201923, a political science and English major, the students have now produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U2-0RLB-UFk\">a video<\/a> about Frances Seward\u2019s life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Clark says Seward initially comes off as \u201ca little critical, a little bit judgmental\u201d with a tad of a \u201cchallenging personality,\u201d but, having historically been presented as an invalid and recluse, she defies easy characterization.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made very kind offers to people; anything from borrowing a tea service to providing a home,\u201d says Clark. While she was up against physical and mental health challenges, most of which had little effective treatment or cures at the time, Frances\u2019s correspondence points indeed to a \u201crational\u201d and \u201cresilient\u201d 19th-century woman.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly traditional in her approach\u2014Frances believed that wives should influence their husband\u2019s views and serve as their moral compasses, yet all from home and not publicly\u2014she was certainly a more committed abolitionist than her husband. Free from the need to appease political allies and opponents alike, Frances felt, according to Clark, that abolition \u201cwas a straight line, that there was no compromise for.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Letters are part of University\u2019s extensive Seward Family Archive<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The three students are reading through four decades of Frances\u2019s letters to and from friends, family, and acquaintances. Their work is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sewardproject.org\/\">Seward Family Digital Archive<\/a>, which digitizes, transcribes, and annotates the prominent family\u2019s letters, diaries, papers, and documents.<\/p>\n<p>From that collection, they have unearthed a very social woman, one who was friendly and warm, often trying to help those around her.<\/p>\n<p>The letters form part of the Seward Family Archive, one of the most extensive firsthand accounts of 19th-century American political and social life, and the largest and most frequently cited manuscript collections in the University\u2019s Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation Department at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/\">River Campus Libraries<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spanning the 19th and first two decades of the 20th century, the collection offers important insights into the central issues that have shaped the identity of America from abolitionism, to universal suffrage, access to education, race relations, medical practice, the history of marriage and family, and the rights of the accused in the criminal justice system, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/people\/faculty\/slaughter_thomas\/index.html\">Thomas Slaughter<\/a>, the Arthur R.
