{"id":470882,"date":"2021-03-03T14:20:52","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T19:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=470882"},"modified":"2021-05-12T12:31:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T16:31:39","slug":"rochester-himalayan-climate-project-environmental-history-award-470882","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-himalayan-climate-project-environmental-history-award-470882\/","title":{"rendered":"Rochester Himalayan project receives environmental history award"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Work to preserve testimonies of a people and their culture is recognized as an \u201coutstanding model of applied environmental history scholarship.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> historians are being honored for their work in chronicling the history of climate change in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Ladakh\">Ladakh<\/a>, a mountain region in the far north of India.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/gsw\/people\/faculty\/bakhmetyeva-tanya\/index.html\">Tanya Bakhmetyeva<\/a>, an associate professor of history and gender, sexuality, and women\u2019s studies who serves as the associate academic director of the University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/gsw\/about\/index.html\">Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women&#8217;s Studies<\/a>, together with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/people\/faculty\/weaver_stewart\/index.html\">Stewart Weaver<\/a>, a professor of history, have been awarded the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/aseh.org\/ASEH-recent-news\/10140272\">Public Outreach Project Award<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/aseh.org\/\">American Society for Environmental History<\/a> for their project \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cwladakh.dwr.digitalscholar.rochester.edu\/\">Climate Witness: Voices from Ladakh<\/a>.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/recent\/rinn_daniel\/index.html\">Daniel Rinn<\/a>, who earned his PhD in history from the University in 2020, is also part of the prize-winning team and the designer of an <a href=\"https:\/\/cwladakh.dwr.digitalscholar.rochester.edu\/\">interactive website<\/a> that the group is in the process of building to make their research accessible to the public.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h2>More about \u201cClimate Witness: Voices from Ladakh\u201d<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the team\u2019s journey through their <a href=\"https:\/\/cwladakh.dwr.digitalscholar.rochester.edu\/\">award-winning site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Read about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/carnegie-fellowship-to-support-climate-history-study-in-himalayas-376972\/\">project\u2019s origins<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- stop copying. --><\/p>\n<p>The society\u2019s award is presented every two years to an environmental history project. \u201cVoices of Ladakh offers an outstanding model of applied environmental history scholarship for the public good,\u201d writes the awards committee in its citation. This project stands out for the \u201cscale and significance of its collaboration and potential impact.\u201d Through its website, the project \u201ccompiles and presents oral histories of climate change in the Himalayas, a region of the world relatively underrepresented in environmental history scholarship. Skillfully bridging the local and the global, the collected testimonies, archive, and website are the fruit of an international effort,\u201d the committee writes.<\/p>\n<p>The website is geared toward researchers, climate activists, and local inhabitants alike and offers insight into the regional effects of climate change. Mountain environments are particularly susceptible to climate change, placing Ladakh\u2014which translates roughly to \u201cland of high passes\u201d\u2014on the front lines of global warming. \u201cLooking closely at the region,\u201d Weaver says, \u201callows us to draw larger conclusions about the challenges of climate change at high altitude, and the ways in which mountain communities are both struggling with and successfully adapting to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bakhmetyeva and Weaver have been researching climate change and local strategies of resilience and adaptation in the Himalayas since 2017. Based in Rochester\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/\">Department of History<\/a>, they are part of a larger collaborative project that also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/20378400-nancy-chin\">Nancy Chin<\/a>, a Rochester associate professor in the undergraduate public health program, and community-partners from the <a href=\"https:\/\/heritagehimalaya.org\/\">Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cibs.ac.in\/\">Central Institute for Buddhist Studies<\/a> in Leh, the principal town of the Union Territory of Ladakh.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of two summers, in 2018 and 2017 respectively, the team collected and recorded a wide array of local testimonies in this high trans-Himalayan land.
