{"id":468622,"date":"2021-02-11T17:59:14","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T22:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=468622"},"modified":"2023-05-17T10:52:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T14:52:16","slug":"eleventh-inspiredance-festival-online-connects-community-468622","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/eleventh-inspiredance-festival-online-connects-community-468622\/","title":{"rendered":"inspireDANCE moves online to connect the dance community and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">The virtual version of the annual festival welcomes everyone to learn new dance styles from top choreographers and instructors.<\/h2>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h2>inspireDANCE Festival online<\/h2>\n<h5><strong>February 12\u2013March 7, 2021<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The inspireDANCE Festival is free and open to the public, but registration is required.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/inspiredanceur.eventbrite.com\">Sign up online<\/a> to attend one, some, or all of this year&#8217;s classes and events.<\/li>\n<li>Learn more about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/news-events\/inspiredance\/index.html\">this year\u2019s festival<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/\">Program of Dance and Movement<\/a>\u2019s eleventh annual inspireDANCE Festival will be a free virtual event over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Open to everyone, the festival, which begins Friday, February 12, and goes through March 7, features a marquee of masterclasses, including dance pioneers and contemporary artists.<\/p>\n<p>Among the performers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guggenheim fellow and Bessie Awardee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgmanpacker.org\">Bridgman|Packer Dance<\/a><\/li>\n<li>International performer Kristina Berger and musician William Catanzaro<\/li>\n<li>American jazz dancer and choreographer Sue Samuels<\/li>\n<li>Bessie Award\u2013winner Shani Collins<\/li>\n<li>Hip hop break dance influencer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/black-culture\/explore\/hip-hop\/40th-anniversary\/rokafella\/\">Ana (Rokafella) Garcia<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the festival will offer attendees the opportunity to dabble in several styles of dance, including West African, ballet, urban dance, yoga, the street dance krump, and Broadway jazz dance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dance and technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The festival will offer sessions with a focus on video, film, and lens-based work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is shifting to do video and film,\u201d says Missy Pfohl Smith, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/PerformingArts\/\">Institute for the Performing Arts<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s why we have this amazing duo of artists Bridgman Packer for inspireDANCE this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer are coartistic directors who form Bridgeman|Packer Dance. As part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/events.rochester.edu\/event\/inspiredance_virtual_festival_behind_the_scenes_with_bridgman_packer_dance#.YCWw5y1h2qR\">\u201cbehind the scenes\u201d artist talk<\/a> on March 1, they will discuss their creative process as well as demonstrate the use of green screen technology, live video processing on stage, and multicamera work.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the festival will host Erin Mayfield, cofounder of the production company Sirens Proof Films, who will present <a href=\"https:\/\/events.rochester.edu\/event\/inspiredance_virtual_festival#.YCWxGi1h2qR\">\u201cStory to Screen: A Crash Course in Dance Film Basics,\u201d<\/a> on February 13, during which attendees can learn essential tips and tricks and learn to avoid the faux pas involved in creating filmed works.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dance as community activism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_468772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-468772\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-468772 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inline-AnaRokafellaGarcia-630x420.jpg\" alt=\"Ana Rockafella Garcia poses mid-dance on a city street.\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inline-AnaRokafellaGarcia-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inline-AnaRokafellaGarcia-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inline-AnaRokafellaGarcia.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-468772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ana (Rokafella) Garcia is among the performers at this year\u2019s online inspireDANCE Festival. In that vein, inspireDANCE will host a virtual high school day on March 5, when local high school students can log in from anywhere to learn with dance program faculty.<\/p>\n<p>An \u201cAction Circle\u201d of dance students and the community will open the festival with a campaign to write letters to state and federal representatives in support of reopening arts programs and venues that have been curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Area Rochester artists such as Natalie Rogers-Cropper of Garth Fagan Dance and Seth Reiser, a New York-based lighting designer and adjunct faculty member, will join the action circle and share their experiences related to the pandemic\u2019s restrictions and shutdowns.<\/p>\n<p>The festival will also host a discussion and re-enactment workshop for the \u201cAnna Halprin\u2019s Blank Placard Dance\u201d\u2014an introduction to the iconic process, which originated in 1967 as a reaction to the Vietnam War and related social unrest of the late 1960s. Workshop participants are welcome to take part in the re-enactment this May. The Program of Dance and Movement was granted rights to restage an outdoor performance. \u201cA very exciting opportunity, coming in May,\u201d says Pfohl Smith. In 2013, the festival grew to add inspireJAM as a way to share hip-hop culture and break dance competitions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"large-up-3\">\n<div
