  {"id":460782,"date":"2020-11-10T15:45:08","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T20:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=460782"},"modified":"2025-10-30T15:15:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T19:15:04","slug":"military-veterans-find-a-home-at-university-460782","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/military-veterans-find-a-home-at-university-460782\/","title":{"rendered":"Military veterans find a home at Ä¢¹½´«Ã½"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Students, staff, faculty come from all branches of service.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When Jeffrey Simmons \u201921 was transitioning from the Navy to the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ last spring, he depended heavily on the <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/blog\/veteran-and-military-family-services-office\/\">Veteran and Military Family Services<\/a> office for help.<br \/>\n\u201cI had a tendency to worry and overplan in terms of getting my GI Bill sorted out, but I found the veterans office to be very knowledgeable and helpful,\u201d the political science major says. \u201cThey were also mercifully patient with me on occasions I worried my book stipend and basic allowance for housing wouldn\u2019t come in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simmons is one of about 30 veterans at the University who are using benefits from the Department of Veteran Affairs to further their education. Another 50 spouses and dependents of veterans are also using those benefits at Rochester.<\/p>\n<p>And many more veterans work at the University\u2014as staff, faculty, and administrators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRochester is committed to supporting our students, faculty, and staff who have served our country,\u201d says Mercedes Ram\u00edrez Fern\u00e1ndez, the Richard Feldman Vice President of Equity and Inclusion and the University\u2019s chief diversity officer. \u201cOur veterans can be found in nearly every level and every unit of our institution. We honor their service and we thank them for the many ways they help us learn, discover, heal, and create.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_dc3eWTkbt4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"font-size: 90%;\"><strong>HONORING OUR VETERANS:<\/strong> Every year, the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ gathers to recognize and celebrate those who have served our country. Veterans are students in the College; they&#8217;re technicians in Hajim labs, they&#8217;re nurse practitioners at the Medical Center; they&#8217;re working in the Power Plant, at Mail Services, in Human Resources, and in the upper levels of executive leadership, among many other programs, departments, schools, and units of the University. Although we cannot be in person together this year, the Office of Equity and Inclusion is continuing our Veterans Day tradition with this video tribute, including remarks from President Sarah Mangelsdorf, and &#8220;The Star-Spangled Banner&#8221; sung by OEI staff member Arena Crues-Dorch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/477790971\">WATCH ON VIMEO &gt;&gt;&gt; <\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Peter Robinson, vice president for government and community relations and a retired colonel in the US Army, says he\u2019s proud that the University includes members from all military branches\u2014Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard\u2014serving as faculty, staff, and students. \u201cThey bring special skills, talents, and experience to our institution and add to the richness of our academic environment,\u201d Robinson says.<\/p>\n<p>The Veteran and Military Family Services office is the primary resource for students, with staff who can offer advice on how best to use their educational benefits. But it\u2019s not the only University initiative that serves military veterans:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/financial-aid\/military-benefits\/\"><strong>Yellow Ribbon Program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0provides financial support for post\u20139\/11 veterans. Tuition and mandatory fees are covered in full, and veterans can transfer their entitlement to dependents.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/veterans-alliance-offers-fellowship-structure-281622\/\"><strong>Veterans Alliance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0support network helps active military and veteran students, staff, faculty, alumni, and their families succeed in higher education and hosts social events throughout the year.<\/li>\n<li>A Veterans Day Run is typically held each year, from Fauver Stadium to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Greater Rochester in Highland Park. Members of the University\u2019s NROTC battalion participate, and after the race, runners tour the memorial and meet with local veterans before returning to campus.\u00a0Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year\u2019s run was held virtually.<\/li>\n<li>An annual ceremony features the pinning of \u201cRocky Vet\u201d pins on University staff, faculty, and students who are veterans. This year\u2019s ceremony was canceled, but commemorative bookmarks were sent out to veterans. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Growing up in Camden, North Carolina, Armstrong knew early on that he wanted to serve in the military. His parents had both been in the Navy, and his older brother served in the Marine Corps. \u201cI wanted to continue the tradition and make a difference,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>He served as an intelligence analyst in the Marines from 2012 to 2017, working in intelligence collection and reporting for government agencies. He spent most of his time at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, but also worked in Canada with Canadian and British armed forces, developing new intelligence equipment and capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong also knew he wanted a college degree. He earned an associate\u2019s degree in Spanish from the Defense Language Institute while in the Marines. He left with the rank of sergeant and entered Rochester in January 2018, graduating with a business degree. He\u2019s currently an MBA student at the Simon Business School, focusing on marketing and analytics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Rochester because of its strong analytical focus and for being known as a military-friendly school,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s one of a few partner schools for the MBA Veteran\u2019s Organization, which was very impressive to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong says the Marines taught him the value of taking on new responsibilities and learning from them. \u201cThe nature of the military often throws you into uncomfortable positions and responsibilities you don\u2019t feel ready for,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I found this to be a great way to grow quickly and learn new skills I otherwise wouldn\u2019t have learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong expects to graduate from Simon in 2022 and says his ultimate goal is a career in marketing, \u201cwhere I can make a difference and have a positive impact on people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Amber Dudevoir<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Air Force<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_460802\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-460802\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-460802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Amber-Dudevoir.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Amber Dudevoir\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Amber-Dudevoir.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Amber-Dudevoir-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Amber-Dudevoir-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-460802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Amber Dudevoir. <\/strong>(Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ photo \/ J. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dudevoir felt destined to serve in the military. It\u2019s part of her family legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy forefather, Johann Ludwig Seaman, served on Frederick the Great\u2019s royal guard and came with his wife and brother from Prussia to the colonies in 1749,\u201d says Dudevoir, who is pursuing her MBA in operations\/technology at the Simon Business School. \u201cSomeone in my family has served in every war in this country\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dudevoir says she \u201cfell in love with the US Constitution\u201d while taking a high school government class in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Feeling patriotic and believing her prospects were limited in her small hometown, she joined the Air Force after graduating in 2008 and attained the rank of staff sergeant in material management, and served for six years with stints in Japan, Kuwait, Alaska, and New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Dudevoir describes her military job as \u201can AutoZone for airplanes.\u201d She was part of a small group of supply and logistics personnel assigned to maintenance units for fighter and remotely piloted aircraft, and often she was vastly outnumbered by men. \u201cThe military taught me that equal opportunity means equal responsibility,\u201d she says. \u201cI worked on a flight line as a supply tech where the gender ratio was 100 men to 1 woman. Everyone works hard. If the men were sweating, you\u2019d better be sweating, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRochester is in my blood,\u201d Dudevoir says. Her grandparents met in the city, and her father and stepmother attended nearby Wheatland-Chili High School. After receiving her bachelor\u2019s degree in liberal arts from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, in 2017, she\u2019s made her home at Simon. \u201cIn a way, Rochester chose me,\u201d she says. \u201cSimon targeted me with their marketing, and I answered the call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dudevoir hopes to return to public service after graduation, but she has a backup plan. \u201cOrbital logistics is an emerging industry,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s what\u2019s going to enable us to become an interplanetary species.\u00a0Someone\u2019s going to put a mine on the moon in my lifetime, and I want to be there when it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Michael Forson<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Army<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_460812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-460812\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-460812 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Michael-Forson.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Michael Forson\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Michael-Forson.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Michael-Forson-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/veterans-day-2020-Michael-Forson-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-460812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Michael Forson. <\/strong>(Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ photo \/ J. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After living in China for seven years, the Ghana native moved to the US with his wife and daughter in 2013. \u201cI went there to study, but things were complicated,\u201d says Forson, who is pursuing a nursing degree from the School of Nursing. At the time, international students weren\u2019t allowed to work in China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a better life in America,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>After settling in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, with his family, Forson joined the Army in 2015 and served three years as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist. He was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 2016. \u201cI joined the Army for the smooth passage to citizenship it allows,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd to enjoy the benefits of my educational dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People from other countries who serve honorably in the US Armed Forces for at least one year during a period of peacetime may apply for naturalization.<\/p>\n<p>Forson earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in biology from St. John\u2019s University in New York City. After graduating from Rochester, he hopes to pursue a nursing career in mental health so he can help other veterans. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Schottmiller joined the Army Reserves after finishing her sophomore year at SUNY Geneseo in 2007. \u201cMy dad went to West Point, and I\u2019d always wanted to serve in some capacity,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen years and many life moments later, she\u2019s still active in the Reserves. She transferred to UNC Charlotte and earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics in 2012, completed her MBA from Simon Business School in 2017, and married in 2019\u2014all while balancing weekend and sometimes weeklong commitments as a sergeant in the Reserves. She reports monthly to the 401st Civil Affairs Battalion in Webster, a Rochester suburb, where she trains for possible future missions. It\u2019s not all about practice, either: Schottmiller was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 2018 as part of the Combined Joint Task Force in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.<\/p>\n<p>Schottmiller was raised in Greece, a Rochester suburb, and knew many friends and coworkers who were students and alumni at Simon. \u201cThey all spoke so highly of the professors, programs, and staff at Simon,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd Simon exceeded my expectations in every way. It allowed me to tailor my MBA to meet my interests and goals and helped me grow my professional network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s currently a research administrator in the Department of Neurology at the University\u2019s Medical Center. Her husband, Joseph Schottmiller, is an office manager at the University\u2019s Orthopedic Outpatient Clinic and served in the US Army as a cavalry scout. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Simmons was a year out of high school when he decided to join the Navy, following in the footsteps of two uncles. \u201cIt\u2019s something I had contemplated for a long time,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve always considered service to be a really important part of life. It just seemed like something I could do that would make a small positive difference in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A native of Irondequoit, a suburb in Rochester, Simmons served in the Navy from 2014 to 2019, leaving as a petty officer second class. An intelligence specialist, he spent his first two years with a squadron on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, and his final three years in Norfolk, Virginia, aboard the USS <em>George Washington<\/em>. During his time in Norfolk, he earned his associate\u2019s degree from Tidewater Community College.<\/p>\n<p>Simmons enrolled in the University for the spring 2020 semester and is a political science major. \u201cI lived in Irondequoit my entire life before joining the military and really wanted to return home,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, he plans to attend law school and then return home to Rochester to start a career in local government or public interest law. He says he could \u201cfill up pages\u201d with life lessons the military taught him. \u201cI have definitely developed a determination and focus that wasn\u2019t there before,\u201d he says. \u201cI have had moments where I remember the tendency for procrastination and laziness I used to have, and I almost can\u2019t believe it now. I\u2019m much more \u2018do what needs to be done, do it on time, try to do it well\u2019 than I used to be.
