  {"id":460152,"date":"2020-10-30T09:51:22","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T13:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=460152"},"modified":"2020-11-02T09:45:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T14:45:14","slug":"flight-of-sites-dance-choreography-campus-spaces-460152","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/flight-of-sites-dance-choreography-campus-spaces-460152\/","title":{"rendered":"With \u2018Flight of Sites,\u2019 students and faculty set choreography to campus architecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\"><em>Flight of Sites: Dances in Innovative Spaces<\/em>, a two-day concert featuring student and faculty choreography, offered both an outdoor and online audience experience.<\/h2>\n<p>Students and faculty in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/\">Program of Dance and Movement<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a> took dance on a tour of the River Campus in late October. Meanwhile, audience members could enjoy the performances live outdoors or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/URDanceMovement\">livestreamed on the department\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the teams in Event and Classroom Management and Wilson Commons Student Activities, the students and faculty assembled pieces that work with spaces the campus community sees and walks by every day. \u201cWe have transformed them into art performance spaces,\u201d says senior dance lecturer <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/people\/faculty\/wilcox-anne\/index.html\">Anne Wilcox<\/a>, who serves as the concert\u2019s director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe enemy of art is the absence of limitations!\u201d she says, repeating an Orson Welles quotation printed in the <em>Flight of Sites<\/em> program.\u00a0\u201cWe need limitation. It makes us push that creative core and say what do you got? If you can\u2019t do it this way how else can you do this? I just love their \u2018Yeah, we can do this!\u2019 spirit. There are beautiful and rich thoughts going through the students\u2019 minds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students, Wilcox notes, rose to the creative challenge. \u201cThey rehearsed outside, even if it was 45 degrees outside. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>STEP BY STEP:<\/strong> On the steps of the Sage Art Center\u2014the campus hub of studio arts and visual studies\u2014roommates Margaret (Maggie) Porcelli \u201922 (pictured right) and Catherine Ramsey \u201921 perform\u00a0\u201cRed Hands.\u201d Inspired by Emanuel Xavier\u2019s poem \u201cLegendary,\u201d the collaborative creation focuses on the dynamics of connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to play with relationships and our relationship to the architecture of the space and see where we could go from there,\u201d says Porcelli, a physics and dance double major. \u201cThere\u2019s a staircase down the hill that drops down to Sage, and there are two benches in the back that are all cement. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>HIDDEN FIGURES:<\/strong> A quartet of dancers perform in front of Hoyt Hall\u2014adjacent to the Eastman Quad\u2014in a piece titled \u201cHidden Depths.\u201d Dayana Segear \u201922 drew her inspiration from the words of writer Anais Nin: \u201cWe don\u2019t see them as we are. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>JAZZ STAGE:<\/strong> Xinyuan (Tom) Yi \u201920, \u201922W (MS) presents an authentic jazz piece on the porch of Wilson Commons. The work features five students in a style of dance introduced in the Harlem community of the 1920s and 1930s. American composer and pianist Duke Ellington wrote \u201cJump for Joy\u201d to portray African Americans positively on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to do this because I\u2019m a huge jazz fan,\u201d says Yi. \u201cAlso, because of what was happening this summer; I was thinking of all the ways I could support the population being suppressed and that supporting this art would be a great way,\u201d he says. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>SHARED SPACES:<\/strong> \u201cFor the first-year students, we chose a space in the hub of the University,\u201d says Wilcox.\u00a0\u201cCommon Ground\u201d\u00a0features six students and takes place on the grounds between Douglass and Wilson Commons. Faculty members Anne Wilcox, <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/people\/faculty\/smith-missy\/index.html\">Missy Pfohl Smith,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/people\/faculty\/beauchamp-rose-pasquarello\/index.html\">Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/people\/faculty\/steele-mariah\/index.html\">Mariah Steele<\/a> each met with the students and did a rehearsal. \u201cWe built off the next person until we formed something that had a cohesive whole.
