The 14 team members\u2014physicians, physician assistants, and registered nurses\u2014arrived back in Rochester on Sunday, after supporting medical staff at Northwell Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nsuh.northwell.edu\/\">North Shore University Hospital<\/a>, on Long Island near the border with Queens, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lij.northwell.edu\/\">Long Island Jewish Medical Center<\/a>, in Queens, for nearly a week.<\/p>\n<p>The trip was in part initiated in response to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/new-york-governor-asks-retired-doctors-nurses-sign-call-amid-coronavirus-crisis-1492825\">urgent plea<\/a> for medical personnel to come to the help of stricken New York City, now the epicenter of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were thrilled to be able to go and pitch in, roll up our sleeves, and we couldn\u2019t be more grateful to Northwell for allowing us to jump right in,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/22422460-aekta-miglani\">Aekta Andrea Miglani<\/a>, the medical director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/strong-memorial\/visiting-information\/emergency-room.aspx\">Emergency Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_424842\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-424842\" style=\"width: 421px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-424842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/NYC-URMedicine-COVID1.jpg\" alt=\"doctor in scrubs and mask.\" width=\"421\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-424842\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flavia Nobay, professor of emergency medicine, gets ready for work at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Besides being eager to help overwhelmed colleagues downstate, the trip also offered local health care personnel a chance to gain valuable insights in their fight against the pandemic in the Greater Rochester area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the basic take-home messages we had was that we\u2019re right on track in terms of our preparing for our own community,\u201d Miglani said. \u201cURMC has done a phenomenal job of really learning from all the places that have been hit very hard, very quickly\u2014and taking that knowledge into account and planning ahead since we potentially have that little bit of lead time. We\u2019ll be able to better serve our community if we get that type of a surge.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/407566961\/873289c5f5\">VIDEO: Hear more from the URMC doctors and nurses returning from their trip to New York City<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochesterfirst.com\/news\/local-news\/urmc-doctors-and-nurses-return-from-helping-those-in-puerto-rico\/\">Wendy Allen-Thompson<\/a>, the director of nursing at Strong Memorial\u2019s Department of Emergency Medicine, called the stint \u201can enlightening experience\u201d and a \u201cbeautiful show of teamwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was amazing how everyone rose up to meet the increased demands,\u201d Allen-Thompson said. Northwell used technology to connect patients with loved ones who couldn\u2019t be in the hospital with them, a practice that the Medical Center already has implemented by handing out iPads to patients for face-to-face calls with loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>Medical Center staff told reporters during a zoom press conference that their colleagues at Northwell Health had sufficient personal protective equipment\u2014referred to by the acronym PPE\u2014and had found ways to make it last longer, if necessary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\" style=\"width: 25%;\">\n<h2>Coronavirus update<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/\">The University\u2019s website<\/a> is a way to find guidance and critical information during a rapidly changing situation.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID-19 symptoms or exposure?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/\">Find out what to do <\/a>if you or a close contact have symptoms or think you may have been exposed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt no time was anyone ever without PPE, nor were they denied any PPE,\u201d confirmed Allen-Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>But they did not sugar coat the situation on the ground. \u201cAll the spaces that they had available to see patients were full much of the time, and the acuity level of the patients\u2014the degree of their illness\u2014was very high,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/31354387-jesse-p-shuff\">Jesse Shuff<\/a>, a physician assistant in Emergency Medicine, who also went on the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Having experienced the dire situation in New York City firsthand, Miglani is unequivocal when it comes to the need for everyone to continue social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot stress enough how important this is for every member of our society, and for every member of our community to be looking out for each other and maintaining those social distancing practices,\u201d Miglani said. \u201cYou may not know a loved one who\u2019s older, or at risk, or immuno-compromised\u2014but one of your friends does.
