One of them is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/graduate\/students\/rubin_lyle\/index.html\">Lyle Jeremy Rubin<\/a>, a PhD candidate in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/index.html\">history at the URochester<\/a>, who served in the Marine Corps from 2006 to 2011 and is a veteran of the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I signed up for the Marine Corps I really believed in the mission. I believed that it was\u00a0bringing something like democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan,\u201d Rubin says in the five-and-a-half-minute-long video clip. \u201cBut now I don\u2019t see how you can be a killer and a nation builder at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubin\u2019s work has appeared in <em>The Nation<\/em>, <em>Dissent<\/em>, <em>Jacobin<\/em>, the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, and other outlets. Last December, he wrote an opinion piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/issue-33\/essays\/base-culture\/\">n+1 magazine<\/a>, a version of which appeared in <em>The Guardian<\/em>, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/dec\/18\/torrent-of-ghastly-revelations-what-military-service-taught-me-about-america-us-marine-corps-afghanistan\">\u201c \u2018A torrent of ghastly
