For the third consecutive year, the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s Mock Trial team<\/a> is headed to the American Mock Trial Association\u2019s national championship<\/a>. Out of 700 teams in the league, they will be one of the select 48 competing at the championship event from April 4 to 7 in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us to go for a third year in a row means a lot of people are putting in the effort and doing their jobs strategically really well,\u201d says two-term president Deisy Abarca-Espiritu \u201919. “It means we have a lot of nationally talented members.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rochester will compete in four rounds against four other teams, alternating between playing the roles of the defense and the plaintiff in this year\u2019s national championship case. The case, Empower Milk vs Jerri Anderson<\/em>, follows fictional company Empower Milk\u2019s attempt to sue a social media influencer for defamation after she posted an unsubstantiated claim about their product which then experienced a decrease in sales.The outcome of each trial in the tournament will be decided by a panel of legal professionals including lawyers, prosecutors, and judges.<\/p>\n

While the case is fictitious, the teams use real case law and rules of evidence modeled after the Federal Rules of Evidence that govern courtroom procedures.<\/p>\n

In addition to Abarca-Espiritu, Rochester\u2019s team includes Denis Lomakin \u201920, Alan Boka \u201920, Tinashe Marera \u201920, Emily Murphy \u201919, Sydney Goldstein \u201922, Meghan Yahrussi \u201920, Samantha Myers \u201919, Lucy Oh \u201922, and Hannah Brennan \u201919.<\/p>\n

As one of the four seniors on the team, Myers is proud of her time on the team and of how far they have come\u2014ranked 78th<\/sup> nationally in 2015 to 28th<\/sup> in 2018. Individually, Myers won an award for \u201cOutstanding Attorney\u201d at the recent semi-finals event in Hamilton, Ohio. \u201cWhat I feel most proud of though,\u201d says Myers, \u201cis how the environment of our organization has changed. Mock trial has transformed into a group that will welcome any and everyone, regardless of where they come from or what knowledge or skills they have, and will provide them with an opportunity to learn and develop themselves both as public speakers and as people.\u201d<\/p>\n

While many teams at the national competitive level have faculty or alumni coaches, the University\u2019s Mock Trial team is completely student-run.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes a lot of effort,\u201d says Abarca-Espiritu, \u201cbut the reason we\u2019ve been able to do it is because we really care about each other and we give each other the feedback we need to be competitive in trial.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the championship looms closer, Abarca-Espiritu wants her team to know its worth. \u201cWe have the ability to beat any team that we\u2019re up against. We\u2019ve shown already how talented we are and I\u2019m excited to show that again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
