Maddy Wary \u201922 enjoyed a whirlwind evening in New York City recently. She hung out with actor Ben Affleck, walked the red carpet at a movie premiere, and enjoyed a private screening of a new action thriller.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like a dream,\u201d Wary says. \u201cI kept thinking, \u2018How did a random girl from Hawaii like me end up here?\u2019 It was a night I will never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

This week promises more dreams come true. Wary makes her onscreen debut in Triple Frontier<\/em>, an action thriller which drops March 13 on Netflix.<\/a> Filmed mostly in Hawaii, it\u2019s about five former special forces operatives who reunite to rob a South American drug lord, with unexpected consequences. Affleck plays Tom \u201cRedfly\u201d Davis, and Wary plays his daughter, Tess.<\/p>\n

\u201cI play an average teenager,\u201d says Wary, a mathematics<\/a> and brain and cognitive sciences<\/a> dual major from Kailua. \u201cThe movie turned out super great, and I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Triple Frontier<\/em> also stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy<\/em>) and Golden Globe nominee Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis<\/em>). It\u2019s directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor and cowritten by Chandor and Academy Award winner Mark Boal. It debuted at some theaters across the nation last week.<\/p>\n

Wary was one of five people to audition for the part in 2017. Her mother had signed her with a Honolulu talent agency, and she auditioned in an office building there, a 30-minute drive from her home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe casting director knew my mom from when I was in elementary school and told her I should try out,\u201d Wary says.<\/p>\n

But soon after, the movie was put on hiatus. Production resumed in 2018, and she was called back to read again. Although she was \u201csuper sick\u201d that day, she received a call from the casting director a week later telling her she had landed the part.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe I was the one chosen,\u201d she says. \u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She filmed her parts over four weeks last spring, with some days involving 12-hour shoots. Triple Frontier<\/em> producer Neal Dodson calls Wary \u201ca natural actor, real honest and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so impressed with Maddy that I\u2019m sure she can do anything she sets her mind to,\u201d Dodson says. \u201cI know the Triple Frontier<\/em> team can\u2019t wait to see what she does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wary\u2019s previous acting experience includes commercials for her dad\u2019s two restaurants, a few plays, and as a \u201ckidcaster\u201d on a morning news show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never did anything in middle school because it was all musicals, and I can\u2019t sing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Wary was nervous about meeting Affleck, the Academy Award winner known for movies such as Good Will Hunting, Gone Girl<\/em>, Argo<\/em>, and two turns at Batman in the films Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice <\/em>and Justice League<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just this random actor,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

So how did it go?<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always so nice to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wary learned about the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ from her high school advisor. \u201cI only applied to East Coast schools, and she thought Rochester would be a good fit for me,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve joined the club tennis team and love being on campus here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wary doesn\u2019t have a career path set and hopes to make more movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love acting, probably because I love the Harry Potter movies so much,\u201d says Wary, who favorite actress is Emma Watson. \u201cBut I also love learning math, and about the brain.\u201d<\/p>\n

She received a framed photo of herself with Affleck and Chandor, which hangs in her dorm room. Her real gift will come every time someone clicks on Triple Frontier <\/em>on Netflix.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited about this,\u201d she says. \u201cI can\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/p>\n
