As a full-time member of the research staff in her husband\u2019s lab at Washington University in St. Louis, Kornberg \u201ccontributed significantly to the science surrounding the discovery of DNA polymerase,\u201d Arthur Kornberg wrote in his 1989 autobiography, <em>For the Love of Enzymes.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 1.5em; color: #9cabba; margin-bottom: 20px; border-bottom: 1px solid #9cabba; padding-bottom: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/tag\/rochester-women\/\">Rochester Women<\/a> <em>is a Newscenter series designed to share the stories of women in the University\u2019s history whose contributions deserve wider recognition than they may have historically received.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>During her career as a biochemist, Sylvy Kornberg \u201938, \u201940M (MS) was best known as the wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/news\/story\/1709\/arthur-kornberg-nobel-winner-and-rochester-alumnus-dies.aspx\">Arthur Kornberg \u201941M (MD), who won a Nobel Prize in medicine in 1959<\/a> for his role in the discovery of the mechanisms of DNA replication.<\/p>\n<p>But as some of her colleagues knew at the time\u2014including her husband\u2014Sylvy Kornberg made vital contributions to the research for which Arthur won the Nobel. As Arthur wrote in his 1989 autobiography <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674307766\">For the Love of Enzymes<\/a><\/em>, \u201cshe had contributed significantly to the science surrounding the discovery of DNA polymerase,\u201d the enzyme that sets the process of DNA replication in motion.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Rochester as Sylvia Ruth Levy, Kornberg was raised in the city, where she was the daughter of Jewish parents who had fled Latvia and Belarus and never completed secondary school. When she applied to the URochester, she reported her favorite subjects as American history and English, and to the question, \u201cWhich subjects have you liked least?,\u201d she answered chemistry and general science. But in college, her interest in science grew, to the point where she was one of a handful of women students to commute from the College for Women\u2019s campus on Prince Street to the College for Men\u2014the River Campus\u2014where the advanced courses in biology and chemistry were offered.<\/p>\n<p>After earning her bachelor\u2019s degree, she began graduate work in biochemistry at the School of Medicine and Dentistry under Walter Bloor, an expert on lipids. Her first job after completing her master\u2019s degree was at the National Cancer Institute. There she became reacquainted with Arthur Kornberg, whom she had first met in Rochester, and who was by that time also at the National Institutes of Health. They married in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>She took a multiyear break from the lab, during which she bore three sons\u2014including Roger Kornberg, who would win the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2006. When Arthur accepted the position of chair of microbiology at Washington University in St. Louis in 1953, Sylvy resumed her research, completing the work that, in another age, might have earned her wide recognition.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, James Watson and Francis Crick published their <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.nlm.nih.gov\/SC\/Views\/Exhibit\/narrative\/doublehelix.html\">classic paper positing the double-helix structure of DNA<\/a>. But how was the complex structure replicated? The Kornbergs, along with then postdoctoral fellows Robert Lehman and Maurice Bessman, and doctoral candidate Steven Zimmerman, delved into that question. As Lehman, now a professor emeritus at Stanford University, noted, the group was frustrated by failed attempts to generate a DNA replication. Sylvy Kornberg discovered an enzyme that degraded an essential triphosphate, clearing the path for successful replication.<\/p>\n<p>She made other important contributions, including research on polyphosphates and their role in helping cells to store and retrieve energy. \u201cThe wide significance of this neglected area of energy metabolism is just now being appreciated,\u201d Arthur Kornberg wrote in 1989.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_366742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-366742\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-366742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SKornberg_URapplication-1024x298.jpg\" alt=\"scan of a handwritten college application.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SKornberg_URapplication-1024x298.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SKornberg_URapplication-630x183.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SKornberg_URapplication-768x223.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-366742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In her application to the URochester, Sylvy Kornberg indicated that the subjects she liked the least were &#8220;Chemistry and General Science.&#8221; Her work on DNA replication would later contribute to her husband Arthur Kornberg&#8217;s Nobel Prize in medicine. (Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ image \/ Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Sylvy Kornberg&#8217;s career was cut short when she was stricken with a rare neurodegenerative disease. The first symptoms of the disease, related to ALS, arose within a few years after the Kornbergs moved to Stanford University in 1959. Kornberg died of the illness in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of her achievements, Kornberg has remained an obscure figure in science. As recently as 2017, her image appeared in the <em>Scientist<\/em> magazine, where she was described as the \u201cmystery woman\u201d standing alongside chemist Jonathan Hartwell at the National Cancer Institute in the 1940s. When the institute was unable to identify the woman, the magazine turned to social media. The Kornbergs\u2019 youngest son, Kenneth, an architect, replied, identifying the woman as his mother.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Scientist<\/em> followed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/daily-news\/sylvy-kornberg-biography-of-a-biochemist-31361\">an article<\/a> devoted to Sylvy Kornberg\u2019s life and work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Her] deep interest in science, her enthusiasm, her work ethic, and all of that would, in today\u2019s world, have led to a very different status and kind of career,\u201d Roger Kornberg told the
