{"id":355632,"date":"2018-12-18T14:46:25","date_gmt":"2018-12-18T19:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=355632"},"modified":"2020-04-28T10:34:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T14:34:34","slug":"new-president-receives-high-praise-from-students-staff-and-faculty-355632","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-president-receives-high-praise-from-students-staff-and-faculty-355632\/","title":{"rendered":"New president Sarah Mangelsdorf receives high praise from students, staff, faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the beginning, the search for the University\u2019s 11th president was designed to include the voices of as many constituencies as possible\u2014from college students and staff members as well as from top faculty, administrators, and trustees.<\/p>\n<p>So perhaps it\u2019s not surprising that as University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison provost Sarah Mangelsdorf prepares to take the helm as Rochester\u2019s next president this summer, she enjoys broad and deep support across the institution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-bottom: 12px;\">WATCH: Highlights from the announcement of Sarah Mangelsdorf as Rochester\u2019s next president<\/h3>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kdbqoe7W1dI?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, Prajita Shrestha \u201922, who smiled Monday morning when she opened her Twitter feed to see the announcement of Mangelsdorf\u2019s selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read her bio after seeing the news,\u201d said the epidemiology and economics dual major from Nepal. \u201cI feel like she has done so much in her life and is the perfect choice. She\u2019s a woman, and that\u2019s a very big step for Rochester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students\u2019 Association vice president Jamal Holtz \u201920 echoed those remarks. \u201cThis is a historical moment for the University, to have the first woman president,\u201d said Holtz, a political science major from Washington, D.C. \u201cI think she brings a lot of perspective, coming from the field of psychology with a career ranging from professor to administrator. She\u2019ll bring new ideas, and that\u2019s what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wisconsin-provost-sarah-mangelsdorf-named-university-of-rochester-president-355342\/\"><strong><em>Read more about President-Designate Mangelsdorf.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among those who played a role in the search process was Sarah Walters, a doctoral student in optics. Walters cochaired the Student Advisory Committee, made up of undergraduate, graduate students, and postdocs across schools and units of the University. Adam Fenster \/ Ä¢¹½´«Ã½)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mangelsdorf, who in her role as provost oversees 12 colleges and schools at Wisconsin as well as several university-wide administrative units, was introduced Monday as Rochester\u2019s next president. She will succeed Richard Feldman, who has led the University since February.<\/p>\n<p>Following a ceremony hosted by University Trustee Cathy Minehan \u201968, (who co-chaired the search with Trustee Danny Wegman), Board Chair Richard Handler \u201983, and Feldman, Mangelsdorf was the guest of honor during a reception and other activities, where she met with members of the University community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/presidential-search\/welcome-messages\/\"><strong><em>Send a welcome message (and see what others are saying).<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jeffrey Tucker, an associate professor of English and a member of the University Advisory Committee, said it became clear during the process that Mangelsdorf was the ideal choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had an online survey that allowed the University community to give expression to what they wanted in the next president,\u201d he said. \u201cWe asked, \u2018what personal characteristics are you looking for?\u2019 The top answers were \u2018trustworthiness, integrity, and collegiality.\u2019 All of those traits are evident in Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tucker says Mangelsdorf\u2019s references\u2014from previous faculty and leadership roles at the University of Illinois and Northwestern, in addition to Wisconsin\u2014were impeccable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who worked with her and under her all spoke very highly of her ability to recruit talented people and leaders of the university,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want someone who will work with the deans and have an ear for what they have to say. (Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ photo \/ Adrian Kraus)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mangelsdorf comes to Rochester not only with deep experience as an administrator, but also as a professor of psychology who is a noted scholar of emotional and personality development.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Sturge-Apple, dean of graduate studies and associate professor of psychology, has often cited Mangelsdorf\u2019s research and believes her background in family dynamics will serve her well as president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf some part of the family isn\u2019t working well, that family breaks down,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s the same at the University, where there are a lot of moving parts. I think she\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her introductory remarks, Mangelsdorf highlighted her appreciation for the role that research universities play in the lives of faculty, students, alumni, and staff, as well as in their home communities and in the larger society. Universities are places that change people\u2019s lives, she said, noting that the scientific discoveries, clinical treatments, humanistic scholarship, and performing and visual arts that grow out of academic communities enrich the experiences of people well beyond campus.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Guzman-Rea, director of the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, said she was particularly touched by Mangelsdorf\u2019s comments about the contributions of staff employees.<\/p>\n<p>In her remarks, Mangelsdorf said, \u201cAlthough universities may exist largely to educate students and support faculty in their scholarship, universities would simply cease to exist without the staff that maintain the buildings and grounds, prepare the food, organize the meetings, scrutinize the contracts, pay the bills, comfort the patients, lobby the politicians, counsel the job seekers, promote the research, curate the collections, and raise the funds to do all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guzman-Rea said those remarks made her cry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany times, historically, faculty and students are raised to the top,\u201d Guzman-Rea said. \u201cThis is the first time I\u2019ve heard substantive information regarding the importance of staff, and how part of her platform is she will support the staff that makes this University run.
