{"id":352922,"date":"2018-12-07T12:11:58","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T17:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=352922"},"modified":"2019-04-04T16:59:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T20:59:12","slug":"cnn-symone-sanders-to-deliver-mlk-commemorative-address-352922","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/cnn-symone-sanders-to-deliver-mlk-commemorative-address-352922\/","title":{"rendered":"Symone Sanders to deliver MLK Commemorative Address"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Symone Sanders, a political commentator for CNN and the national press secretary for Senator Bernie Sanders during his 2016 presidential run, will deliver the University\u2019s 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Address.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders will speak at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. The annual event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019s presentations challenge the conventional wisdom that strong communities are only defined by what they have in common. Instead, she outlines ways in which differences contribute to effective social movements.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her work on CNN, Sanders is a regular contributor to the Crooked Media network of podcasts. She has been featured on NPR, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC, and BET and has been profiled in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, the <em>New Yorker<\/em>, <em>Essence <\/em>magazine, and <em>Elle<\/em>. At 25, she was youngest press secretary for a presidential candidate in history and earned a spot on <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine\u2019s list of 16 young Americans shaping the election.<\/p>\n<p>The MLK Commemorative Address was instituted in 2001 to promote diversity, freedom, civil rights, and social justice. It\u2019s co-sponsored by the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/president\/\">Office of the President\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/OMSA\/\">Office of Minority Student Affairs<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/more-than-a-decade-of-distinguished-mlk-speakers-209862\/\">Past speakers<\/a><\/strong> include a wide range of major figures in civil rights,
