  {"id":349902,"date":"2018-11-19T14:53:17","date_gmt":"2018-11-19T19:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=349902"},"modified":"2018-11-19T14:55:12","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T19:55:12","slug":"real-readers-give-rochester-students-edge-349902","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/real-readers-give-rochester-students-edge-349902\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Real readers\u2019 give Rochester students an edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aaron Swerdlow-Freed \u201915 says the insights he received as a student from a \u201creal reader\u201d have been critical to his career.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Bobich \u201904 and Philip Breitfeld \u201979M (MD), \u201982M (Res) wish they could have benefited from a similar experience.<\/p>\n<p>All three are now real readers themselves, part of a unique approach by the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ to give its students an edge in applying for internships and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Real readers are University alumni, parents, and friends who volunteer their time to give students \u201creal world\u201d feedback on the resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and other materials they prepare for their portfolios as part of a 2-credit course called Communicating Your Professional Identity.<\/p>\n<p>The course is required of all engineering undergraduates, and comparable courses are optional for students in other majors.<\/p>\n<p>Input from real readers \u201cis really important because it provides extra motivation for the students; it makes it real for them that when you go out into the job market, this is the kind of feedback you\u2019ll be getting,\u201d says Deborah Rossen-Knill, director of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.rochester.edu\/\">Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program<\/a>. Program faculty and staff designed and implemented the course in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/careercenter\/\">Gwen M. Greene Center for Career Education and Connections.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rob Clark, former dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences<\/a> and now the University\u2019s provost, provided the impetus that led to the launch of the classes for engineering students in 2013. He had heard repeated comments from employers \u2013 many of them University alumni \u2013 that college graduates across the board, accustomed to communicating by text and other digital formats, often struggle to present themselves professionally when applying for internships and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Requiring the classes, he reasoned, would give Hajim students an advantage, especially if it included feedback from real readers.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 142 real readers are working with 224 students in the fall 2018 semester, and 330 students are registered for the course in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018I\u2019m really able to help\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Swerdlow-Freed, now an enterprise account executive at Macedon Technologies in Herndon, Virginia, says his real reader \u2013 a solutions engineer \u2013 made a \u201cvery positive impression\u201d on him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h3><strong>Interested in becoming a real reader?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For more information about how you can participate as a real reader, contact: <a href=\"mailto:michelle.marks-hook@rochester.edu\">michelle.marks-hook@rochester.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the course of his studies, Swerdlow-Freed became interested in not only the technical skills involved in computer science, but also in learning how to communicate his work to a general audience.\u00a0 His real reader, he discovered, was doing exactly that in his job \u2013 working directly with prospective clients to help them understand the software they were buying, and how it worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was something l looked into very deeply because it really appealed to me,\u201d Swerdlow-Freed says. And when his current position opened up, requiring both technical knowledge and ability to communicate with clients, \u201cI was able to make a pretty strong business case to let me take it over rather than hiring someone new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been a real reader for three semesters. \u201cI make it a policy to push on the students lightly,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m never going to tell them, \u2018hey, you should come to me and ask if I will be a reference,\u2019 or \u2018you should come to me and ask about your resume.\u2019\u00a0 But I\u2019m always looking for the students who are willing to reach out and get everything that they can out of this program. And when they do that, I\u2019m really able to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Helping students explore their purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Breitfeld is chief strategy and innovation officer at Champions Oncology, a company in Hackensack, New Jersey, that offers personalized cancer treatments for patients and assists pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in translating research into clinical solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Breitfeld says he likes to help the biology majors he mentors to focus on two key questions.\u00a0The first is how they\u2019ve gotten to where they are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome students have a clearly identified purpose,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cSome have not realized that they indeed are driven by a purpose they have not yet explicitly articulated to themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second is how they communicate their story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most successful and fulfilled technical and science-oriented professionals have a way of communicating that engages others,\u201d Breitfeld says.\u00a0\u201cThey bring people into their professional talents and interests, and they do so with stories that people can relate to.\u201d\u00a0Breitfeld thinks it\u2019s great that students have a chance to learn these skills while they\u2019re still at the University, rather than \u201con the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents who have the real reader program experience are better prepared as they enter the first part of their career.\u00a0The program offers practical advice on professional communication and provides a ready way for students to start to widen their professional network though the connection with their real reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018More than just resumes and cover letters\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bobich went on to earn master\u2019s and PhD degrees at Arizona State University after completing her BS in biomedical engineering at Rochester. She\u2019s now a principal product engineer and sourcing engineering process coordinator for Medtronic in Tempe.<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago, Laura Jones, now the lead instructor for Communicating Your Professional Identity, emailed her about the real reader program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember when I was trying to apply for internships and for jobs, and not being sure what to put in my resume or in my cover letter,\u201d Bobich recalls. \u201cThe only person I could think of, to reach out to, was my father because he worked as an engineer.\u201d But it can be awkward for students to rely on their parents for input, she adds. When Jones approached her with the idea for this program, it just totally resonated with me that this was exactly what I was hoping to find when I was a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019ve been hooked ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bobich finds she rarely limits the initial informational interview to the recommended 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about more than just resumes and cover letters,\u201d she says. \u201cA lot of the students ask me should they apply to grad school or apply for job? What\u2019s the benefit of getting a higher degree? Should I try to work while I\u2019m at school, or just focus on my course work? What kind of internship should I get?
