Nearly 1,400 master\u2019s and doctoral students in Arts, Sciences & Engineering<\/a>\u00a0are enrolled at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½<\/a>, with their areas of study ranging from philosophy to physics. Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ half are international students who come from 67 nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents are drawn to the intellectual rigor of our departments, but they find a home in our closely connected campus,\u201d says Melissa Sturge-Apple, dean of graduate studies in Arts, Sciences & Engineering. \u201cThe scientist can literally walk 300 yards across the quad and connect with the humanist. And the ability to make cross-disciplinary collaborations for our graduate students fuels scholarly exchange and leads to intellectual innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a look at some of the University\u2019s graduate students.<\/p>\n

Carson Kautz<\/b>\u00a0is a first-year PhD student in clinical psychology from Lodi, California, and a recipient of a\u00a0Provost\u2019s Fellowship<\/a>. She\u2019s working with Christie Petrenko, a research associate at Mt. Hope Family Center. Kautz\u2019s research focuses on interventions\u00a0to reduce adverse outcomes for children with developmental disabilities, particularly those with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.<\/p>\n

Austin Skeeters<\/b>\u00a0is a third-year PhD student from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and a recipient of the\u00a0Barnard Fellowship<\/a>. The 2016 Florida State University graduate is working in physics professor Patrick Oakes\u2019s lab. His primary research project is characterizing the curvature-sensing properties of the cytoskeletal protein septin.<\/p>\n

Aeshaan Wahlang\u00a0<\/b>is a second-year master\u2019s student in computer science. The India native is part of the Quantitative Semantics Lab in the linguistics department, studying nominal semantics through data science techniques.<\/p>\n

Dominique Townsend<\/b>\u00a0is a first-year English doctoral student from Southern California who studies construction of racial and gender identity in 20th-century American and British literature. She\u2019s a recipient of a\u00a0Provost\u2019s Fellowship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nik Chatzikonstanti<\/b>\u00a0is a fourth-year PhD student in mathematics from Rhodes, Greece, and a\u00a0Barnard Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0recipient whose research focus is a problem in geometric measure theory called \u201cFalconer\u2019s conjecture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Henry,<\/b>\u00a0a third-year doctoral student from Benson, North Carolina, poses while helping to construct one of eight cosmic ray tagger frames at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN,\u00a0in Geneva, Switzerland. Henry is studying high energy physics and is a\u00a0National Science Foundation GRFP Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0recipient.<\/p>\n

Wednesday Bushong<\/b>\u00a0is a fourth-year brain and cognitive sciences doctoral student from San Diego. A\u00a0Barnard Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0recipient, she studies how people quickly and effortlessly process language. She does this through behavioral experiments and computational modeling.<\/p>\n

Yanssel Garcia<\/b>\u00a0is a fourth-year doctoral student in philosophy from Miami. He is primarily interested in understanding the nature of consciousness and its relationship to the brain.<\/p>\n

April Wang<\/b>\u00a0is a fourth-year doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering from Yantai, China. Her research focuses on using ultrasound elastography to study the pancreatic cancer tumor microenvironment, and in particular, how the latter\u2019s biomechanical properties affect therapies.<\/p>\n
