  {"id":331592,"date":"2018-08-21T13:01:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T17:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=331592"},"modified":"2018-08-23T18:43:09","modified_gmt":"2018-08-23T22:43:09","slug":"from-nicu-to-rochester-gelb-triplets-part-of-class-of-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/from-nicu-to-rochester-gelb-triplets-part-of-class-of-22\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Full circle\u2019: Triplets born at Strong join Class of 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jay and Sandra Gelb \u201889 became parents on the morning of November 12, 1999.<\/p>\n<p>And again, four hours later.<\/p>\n<p>And again, five minutes after that.<\/p>\n<p>The triplets were born at 29 weeks gestation\u201411 weeks premature\u2014and weighed a combined 6.3 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were so small you could hold one in your hand,\u201d Jay says.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/strong-memorial.aspx\">Strong Memorial Hospital<\/a> called the triplets Baby A, Baby B, and Baby C, and cautioned the parents not to give them real names for several weeks. They had less than a 50 percent chance of survival, and the bereavement for \u201cnamed\u201d infants would be longer and more painful, they cautioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 29 weeks, there\u2019s no real viability,\u201d Sandra says. \u201cIt was a very scary time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The triplets spent three months at Strong\u2019s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Sandra took the day shift, and Jay stayed nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally,\u201d Jay says, \u201cwe got to take our babies home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This month, 19 years later, Matthew, Nicole, and Robert will enroll at the URochester as part of the Class of 2022\u2014literally across the street from where they were born.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels like we\u2019ve come full circle,\u201d Nicole says. \u201cWe\u2019re NICU graduates.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q6YB82ziXfc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Serving the community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>All three applied to and were admitted <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/ed\/\">Early Decision<\/a> to Rochester\u2019s largest and most competitive Early Decision cohort yet. As members of the Class of 2022, they\u2019ll be part of the most selective class ever to enter the College, from among a record 20,000-plus applicants.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew and Robert will enroll in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/bsb\/\">Barry Florescue Undergraduate Business Program<\/a>, aspiring to follow their father into the banking business. Nicole plans to become a special education teacher. All three have been avid swimmers since age five and plan to join Rochester\u2019s varsity team this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The triplets continue a deep family connection to the University. In addition to their mother, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology, their maternal great-grandmother, Anne Wolk \u201958, who died in 2003, graduated from Rochester. And their grandfather, Allan Wolk, who died in 2012, was a professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/simon.rochester.edu\/index.aspx\">Simon Business School<\/a> for 41 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019d be very happy we are continuing the family tradition at Rochester,\u201d Sandra says. \u201cHe always loved the University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolk taught his grandchildren the importance of community service, and Jay and Sandra reinforced it. Jay has been on the Golisano hospital board of directors for 18 years and is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/giving\/gec\/\">George Eastman Circle<\/a>, the University\u2019s leadership giving society. The family has purchased numerous Giraffe OmniBeds for Golisano through the years. The OmniBed pairs an incubator and radiant warmer to create a seamless healing microenvironment for babies. Last year, the triplets pooled their birthday and work money (and their parents matched them, dollar for dollar) to purchase another OmniBed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe enjoy giving back,\u201d Nicole says. \u201cWe realize how fortunate we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\u201cIt was a rollercoaster, but we all got through it. We\u2019re forever indebted to Golisano Children\u2019s Hospital.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>Nicole started a Golisano Children\u2019s Club at her high school and organized a carnival to benefit the hospital, bringing 10 of her fellow students to Strong. The siblings also volunteer in a hospice home and work at the Jewish Home of Rochester, with duties ranging from manning the caf\u00e9 to transporting residents from their rooms to activities to social visits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe care for a diverse group of residents, and Matthew, Robert, and Nicole treat them all with respect and a genuine and unsolicited kindness,\u201d says Shannon Megna, volunteer coordinator at the Jewish Home. \u201cTheir work here has made a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Allan Wolk would be thrilled his only three grandchildren chose the school he loved, it was their choice to apply. They attended numerous summer sports camps at Rochester over the years and took courses last summer in the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enrollment.rochester.edu\/precollege\/\">pre-college programs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe looked at other places,\u201d Nicole says, \u201cbut nothing could compare to Rochester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also their choice to stay together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always do everything together,\u201d Robert says. \u201cWe really don\u2019t know anything different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One thing is certain: the brothers won\u2019t share a dorm room this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love being together,\u201d Matthew says, \u201cbut it will be nice to make new friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Best friends<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The triplets attended the Harley School, an independent, college preparatory school just outside of Rochester, since kindergarten. All three are avid skiers who enjoy hanging with friends, and watching New York Yankees baseball games and NBC\u2019s hit drama, <em>This Is Us<\/em>, a show about triplets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I found that out, I knew we had to watch,\u201d Nicole says.<\/p>\n<p>They call themselves best friends. Nicole says Robert is \u201cthe clown,\u201d who always finds a way to make her laugh. And Matthew is \u201cthe nicest person I know. He has a great heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brothers say Nicole is \u201cthe boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s always looking out for our best interests,\u201d Matthew says.<\/p>\n<p>In turn, the brothers are protective of their sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy two bodyguards,\u201d Nicole calls them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three heartbeats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sandra was expecting to hear one heart beat when she went for an ultrasound 21 weeks into her pregnancy in the fall of 1999. Instead, she heard three. She rushed to her husband\u2019s office and \u201calmost drove into a ravine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sure there must be some mistake, but there wasn\u2019t,\u201d Jay says. \u201cIt was shocking and exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra started contractions soon after and spent the next eight weeks confined to a bed at Strong before the babies came. Matthew weighed 1 1\/2 pounds, Nicole weighed 2 pounds, and Robert followed at 2 1\/2 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were good days and bad days,\u201d Jay says, \u201cIt was a rollercoaster, but we all got through it. We\u2019re forever indebted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/childrens-hospital.aspx\">Golisano Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ready for college<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The family was vacationing in Florida last December when Nicole checked her email. She saw the words <em>\u201dCongratulations on being accepted into the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s Class of 2022!\u201d<\/em> but held her emotions until her brothers could log in. Once Robert and Matthew received the good news, the family, all fans of baseball, celebrated their \u201ctriple play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great day,\u201d Matthew says. \u201cIt\u2019s what we always wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra and Jay soon will be empty nesters, but their kids will be around the corner and plan to visit often. The\u00a0 triplets are ready for a new chapter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir lives have come full circle,\u201d Jay says. \u201cWhen they were in kindergarten, they were in a play dressed as bumblebees.
