Their names will also be inscribed on plaques in the Medical Center and in Wallis Hall on the River Campus.<br \/>\n<a id=\"witmer\"><\/a><br \/>\n<em>(Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ photos \/ J. Adam Fenster)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Witmer Award<\/h2>\n<p>The Witmer Award for Distinguished Service is presented to staff members whose careers have been characterized by outstanding and sustained contributions to the University.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/carroll-witmer-quote.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Lukira Carrol with the quote \u201cShe makes people \u0003 feel welcome in all situations, demonstrating sincere empathy, as well as authentic joy.\u201d\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/carroll-witmer-quote.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/carroll-witmer-quote-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/carroll-witmer-quote-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Lukira (Lucy) Carroll<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Executive assistant to the dean; special events coordinator<br \/>\nSchool of Nursing<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lucy Carroll has demonstrated her commitment to excellence in many ways during the nearly 40 years she has served the University\u2014and she does so with warmth and a sense of humor.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the University in 1978, Carroll held positions in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Surgery before moving to the School of Nursing in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to managing the dean\u2019s calendar and travel schedule, she fosters a welcoming environment in the dean\u2019s office through her genuine and friendly nature. That\u2019s enabled Carroll to build relationships with many faculty, staff, and students over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer commitment to the School of Nursing is second to none. Whether it\u2019s with the faculty, staff, students, donors, or my patients, she works to make everyone\u2019s life easier, better, or more enjoyable. And she certainly does so for mine,\u201d writes School of Nursing Dean Kathy Rideout, in a letter nominating Carroll for the award.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her front-line role in the dean\u2019s office, Carroll organizes the school\u2019s convocation, accelerated program for non-nurses pinning ceremony, Meliora Weekend events, all-school meetings, academic program orientation, commencement and other events important to the school. She moved to the Center for Oral Biology in 1999 and took on several leadership positions there. In her current role, she is chief administrator and chief financial officer for one of the largest basic science departments at the University. She manages more than $10 million in extramural research funds annually and coordinates several NIH-funded training programs. In addition, she oversees several centers and facilities, such as the Upstate Stem Cell cGMP Facility, the Center for AIDS Research, and the Genomics Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom her outstanding management of department resources, to sound guidance and knowledge assisting faculty with extramural funding opportunities, to personnel management and her knack for team building, Wendy is a shining example to follow, particularly for early administrators such as myself,\u201d writes Daisy Bird Geer, finance manager for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues supporting Keck\u2019s nomination repeatedly highlight her willingness to go the extra mile, her constant commitment to improvement and cost savings, and her dedication to the University\u2019s mission and values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWendy personifies the sense of community and inclusiveness in the department,\u201d writes Jacques Robert, professor of microbiology and immunology. \u201cShe makes herself always available, has friendly words to everyone, and really cares about the wellbeing of each individual in the department.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tanski-witmer-quote.jpg\" alt=\"portrait with quote \u201cHer tenure over the past two decades is decorated with relationships and moments of service to the University.&quot;\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tanski-witmer-quote.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tanski-witmer-quote-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tanski-witmer-quote-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Barbara Tanski<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Administrator<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Office of the Provost<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Barbara Tanski is a professional, dedicated, and caring colleague who is always willing to help. During her two decades of service to the University, her impact has been felt not only among those who work directly with her, but at multiple community organizations that receive donations of money, goods, or services from University faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>As administrator in the Office of the Provost, her key responsibilities include managing office purchases, travel reimbursements, and financial accounts for offices that report to the provost. She also tracks academic leaves and makes sure the financials are in order so that faculty are properly compensated, among other responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarb is truly a dedicated, loyal employee who works relentlessly to make sure the office and people in it have the highest level of support,\u201d writes Gigi DeMita, executive assistant to the provost, who nominated Tanski for the award. \u201cHer tenure over the past two decades is decorated with relationships and moments of service to the University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith her vast knowledge and caring personality, Barb goes out of her way to help find whatever solution is needed,\u201d writes Provost Rob Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Provost\u2019s Office, Tanski was the Finance Office manager and administrator to the University controller for nearly 10 years. She often worked extra hours to pull together financial statement files and board materials during audits.\u00a0She is always thinking about ways to save the department money, nominators say, and often finds creative ways to do so\u2014such as keeping a collection of reusable office supplies to share.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year, she organizes office collections for local charities, such as Foodlink and the American Cancer Society\u2019s Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk, and for disaster relief efforts. She has been a representative for the University\u2019s United Way campaign since she joined the University 1998.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat truly is special about Barb is how she brings community service into the office,\u201d writes Holly Crawford, senior vice president for administration and finance. \u201cShe has a way of getting people to contribute, without feeling obligated to contribute.\u201d<br \/>\n<a id=\"meliora\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Meliora Award<\/h2>\n<p>The Meliora Award recognizes staff members whose work performance and dedication during the preceding few years exemplify the University\u2019s motto, <em>Meliora<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/andreatta-meliora-quote.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait with the quote, &quot;she encourages players to pursue their interests wholeheartedly, offering a culture of support and flexibility so rare in competitive athletics.\u201d \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/andreatta-meliora-quote.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/andreatta-meliora-quote-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/andreatta-meliora-quote-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Wendy Andreatta<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Field hockey coach<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Athletics and Recreation<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wendy Andreatta has led the University\u2019s field hockey team to many winning seasons since she became head coach in 2007\u2014but her impact extends well beyond the field. She is a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to many\u2014as well as a champion for the sport of field hockey in the Greater Rochester region.<\/p>\n<p>Under her leadership, the Yellowjackets are 157\u201370 and have had 11 straight seasons with 10 or more wins. She has coached nine players to All-America honors. Twenty-nine of her players have earned a total of 52 All-Liberty League awards. The field hockey team earned a trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the past three years, advancing to the Elite 8 round twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to her positive personality, dynamic coaching style, and love for the URochester, Andreatta\u2019s understanding of the Meliora mission combined with the Division III mission draws top academic performers,\u201d writes nominator Sarah Dixon \u201913, \u201915N, who worked with Andreatta as both a player and assistant coach.<\/p>\n<p>Andreatta has been recognized as North Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Association and her team has earned coaching staff of the year honors from the Liberty League and the National Field Hockey Association.<\/p>\n<p>She also contributes to the growth of the sport in Western New York, as founder of Finger Lakes Field Hockey, a Rochester-based travel field hockey team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWendy has built an athletic legacy that I am humbled to be a part of. They have done so within a fluid regulatory environment, which has recently included executive orders affecting immigration policy, interpretation, and implementation, as well as challenges to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. All the while, they have stayed committed to making the campus a more inclusive environment that supports individuals from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to keep the students and scholars at the center of their mission while complying with complex immigration regulations is extremely challenging,\u201d writes Molly Jolliff, director of international student engagement, in a letter supporting the office\u2019s nomination. \u201cIndeed, sometimes juggling the needs of students and scholars with legal compliance is nearly an impossible task. Back row, from left: Casey Calabria, Tamsan Cleveland, Lynne Brown, Harvey Gamble, David Lent, Michael Van Roo, Cathleen VanHouten, Stephanie Shulder.\u00a0 Not pictured: Dan Mancuso, Kate Miller, Mark Ott, Robert Panzer, Kathy Parrinello, Katherine Shaw, Brenda Tesini, Jennifer Redshaw Trask, and Pat Witzel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members of Strong Memorial Hospital\u2019s <em>C. difficile <\/em>Infection Prevention Task Force are being honored for their multifaceted approach to solving a challenging problem\u2014the spread of hospital-onset <em>C. difficile<\/em> infection (CDI), a potentially deadly infection that causes severe diarrhea and colitis.<\/p>\n<p>The task force\u2014which includes representatives from the departments of medicine, nursing, infection prevention, environmental services, critical care nursing, quality improvement, and \u00a0pharmacy\u2014was created in 2011 to combat the infection\u2019s spread in the facility. The goal was to identify strategies to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired CDI by 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Around 230 patients who contracted CDI in the community or at another health care facility are admitted to Strong Memorial Hospital each year. At the time that the taskforce was formed, an additional 200 patients acquired CDI while they were at Strong.<\/p>\n<p>Initial efforts focused on enhanced cleaning guidelines. Guidelines for <em>C. difficile<\/em> testing were reviewed and revised. Personal protective equipment was placed outside patients\u2019 rooms. When the team\u2019s first few years of efforts yielded small reductions, they kept introducing new \u00a0measures to further disrupt the spread of the infection.<\/p>\n<p>Among the changes that followed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacy and health care providers worked together to ensure wise use of antibiotics when treating the infection.<\/li>\n<li>The task force supported the Wash-Glove-Wash hand-hygiene campaign.<\/li>\n<li>Residents, hospitalists, and advanced practice providers were educated on current guidelines for testing for the infection.<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Services also enhanced their cleaning methods to more effectively target <em>C. difficile<\/em> spores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTheir educational initiatives have impacted countless trainees and faculty, and the systems changes have ensured that these improvements will be resilient,\u201d writes Valerie Lang, an associate professor of medicine, in a letter supporting the team\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>The cumulative effect of their work has significantly reduced infection rates\u2014by 33 percent, exceeding the original 30 percent goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a busy institution where we see occupancy rates over 100 percent daily, to have a reduction in the hospital-acquired <em>C. difficile <\/em>rate is truly a remarkable achievement,\u201d writes Dwight Hettler, associate director or nursing\/clinical operations at Wilmot Cancer Institute, in a letter supporting the team\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"scsa\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Staff Community Service Award<\/h2>\n<p>The Staff Community Service Award honors a nonmanagement staff member whose commitment best exemplifies service to the University and the Greater Rochester community.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pajrowski-community-service-quote.jpg\" alt=\"portrait with the quote, \u201cShe is committed to making sure that each dog or cat she helps place will live in a loving, safe, healthy home.&quot;\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pajrowski-community-service-quote.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pajrowski-community-service-quote-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pajrowski-community-service-quote-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Christle Pajrowski<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Financial analyst<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Office of Budgets and Planning<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Christle Pajrowski is being recognized for her tireless efforts to help the community\u2019s homeless pet population.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014, Pajrowski has worked with Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets (GRASP), a nonprofit organization committed to reducing the number of homeless pets in the town of Greece by promoting responsible pet ownership and placing homeless dogs and cats into loving permanent homes.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s willing to do anything to help: From transporting pets, to staffing pet adoption events, to fundraising, Pajrowski has done it all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur nonprofit group is made up of 100 percent volunteers and knowing Christle is someone that can be relied upon in a moment\u2019s notice to do whatever is needed contributes greatly to our success,\u201d writes Tami Becker, a \u201ccat team\u201d coordinator with GRASP, in a letter supporting Pajrowski\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>She has fostered countless stray animals before they are transitioned to new homes. She works with feral cats to help them learn to better interact with people so that they may someday be placed in someone\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristle also provides invaluable assistance to prospective owners to make certain they are prepared and that they are selecting the animal this is best suited for their family and home,\u201d write nominators Michael Andrews, senior associate vice president for budgets and planning, and Cheryl Bennett, senior director of budget development and management. \u201cShe is committed to making sure that each dog or cat she helps place will live in a
