Neff suspects the sound is due to either a reverberation or the Doppler effect.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">??Sound ON??<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/science?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#science<\/a> is done, it&#8217;s fun to drop ice down a 90 m deep borehole in an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Antarctic?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Antarctic<\/a> ?? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/glacier?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#glacier<\/a> \u2744. So satisfying when it hits the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Happy hump day. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dQtLPWQi7T\">pic.twitter.com\/dQtLPWQi7T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Peter Neff (@peter_neff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peter_neff\/status\/968911225919700992?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<p>The ice is amazing for reasons other than the bizarre noise it makes when it falls, however. Climate scientists like Neff and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/people\/faculty\/petrenko_vasilii\/index.html\">Vasilii Petrenko<\/a>, an associate professor of Earth and environmental sciences at Rochester, use ice cores\u2014cylinders of ice 10 inches in diameter and weighing up to 80 pounds\u2014to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/pr\/Review\/V80N2\/0505_icecores.html\">learn about the earth\u2019s past climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers drill boreholes to remove ice cores from sites in Antarctica and Greenland. Tiny bubbles trapped in the ice contain ancient air that is up to hundreds of thousands of years old. By extracting and studying the air, climate scientists gain clues about past climate patterns, which can help them understand future climate change. In fact, using data from ice cores, Rochester researchers recently reported two big findings: human-made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/man-made-methane-emission-levels-larger-previously-believed-263912\/\">methane levels are higher than previously believed<\/a> and it\u2019s unlikely future warming will trigger a release of natural Arctic methane reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy overarching research interest is to use glacier ice as a medium for understanding the past and future evolution of Earth\u2019s climate and environment,\u201d Neff says. \u201cThere are so many questions we can explore just through the information trapped in the ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">These &amp; other ice cores are how we know atmospheric CO2 \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GHG?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GHG<\/a> concentrations over the last 800,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>Glacier ice traps ancient air, caught in the space between snowflakes \u2744 as they are compressed into ice.
