{"id":295072,"date":"2018-02-28T10:38:07","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T15:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=295072"},"modified":"2018-02-28T10:40:06","modified_gmt":"2018-02-28T15:40:06","slug":"world-rankings-highlight-universitys-global-place-295072","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/world-rankings-highlight-universitys-global-place-295072\/","title":{"rendered":"World rankings highlight University&#8217;s global place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/2018\/world-ranking#%21\/page\/0\/length\/25\/sort_by\/rank\/sort_order\/asc\/cols\/stats\">Times Higher Education World University Rankings<\/a> (THE World University Rankings) list the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ at number 51 among U.S. universities\u2014public or private\u2014and number 153 among universities worldwide.\u00a0These global rankings evaluate 1,102 of the world\u2019s leading research universities, drawing on 13 performance indicators underlying five metrics: research, teaching, research influence, industry income and international outlook. Times Higher Education (THE) is a weekly news magazine based in London.<\/p>\n<p>THE also provides academic subject rankings. Thus far, the released subject rankings recognizing the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No. 27 for Psychology<\/li>\n<li>No. 81 in Social Sciences<\/li>\n<li>No. 89 in Education<\/li>\n<li>No. 126-150 in Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health<\/li>\n<li>No. 176-200 in Life Sciences<\/li>\n<li>No. 176-200 in Arts and Humanities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese rankings have become important tools for international students, who often use them to differentiate between institutions globally,\u201d says Jane Gatewood, vice provost for global engagement. \u201cIf the University maintains and improves its strong global position, these rankings can help us open our doors to students from places we might not be able to reach directly. The rankings also allow governments to compare schools, allocate funding for scholarships, and help students find specific programs. For all of these reasons, international rankings have become an increasingly important point on the international higher education landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>THE Rankings also recently listed the University among the top 100 universities in the world with the best student\/staff ratio. The University\u2019s overall undergraduate student\/teacher ratio is 10:1.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\u201cIf the University maintains and improves its strong global position, these rankings can help us open our doors to students from places we might not be able to reach directly.\u201d <em>Jane Gatewood, Vice Provost for Global Engagement <\/em><\/div>\n<p>According to the editor of THE World Rankings, Phil Baty, they want to assess universities\u2019 performance with the most comprehensive and balanced ranking in the world. Institutional data is collected from worldwide research-led institutions that teach undergraduates; publish more than 1,000 research papers over a five year period; and have a broad range of activity (no more than 80 percent of activity exclusively in any single subject area). \u2018Most Innovative University\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The University also was recognized at No. 79 in Reuters\u2019 \u201cTop 100 Most Innovative Universities Worldwide,\u201d a list that identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries.\u00a0For this, institutions were ranked across 10
