Below are some highlights of global growth, research, engagement, and achievement.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Big Honors in 2017<\/h2>\n<h2><strong><br \/>\nRochester graduate Richard Thaler receives 2017 Nobel Prize<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_286642\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-286642\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-286642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/fea-richard-thaler-getty-630x378.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Thaler\" width=\"425\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/fea-richard-thaler-getty-630x378.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/fea-richard-thaler-getty-193x117.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/fea-richard-thaler-getty-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/fea-richard-thaler-getty.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-286642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Richard Thaler &#8217;74 (Ph.D) is the ninth Nobel Laureate with a URochester connection. <br \/><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Richard Thaler \u201974 (PhD), who earned his graduate degrees at the URochester,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/university-rochester-graduate-richard-thaler-wins-nobel-prize\/\"> received the 2017 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to behavioral economics.\u00a0<\/a>With the announcement of his receipt of the 2017 Nobel Memorial Prize, he joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochesters-nobel-laureates\/\">eight other Rochester graduates or faculty<\/a> who have won this most prestigious international recognition. Some of the additional University honors in 2017 were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>X.-C. Zhang<\/strong>, M. Parker\u00a0Givens Professor in The Institute of Optics,\u00a0 won the 2017 Humboldt Prize. The Humboldt Prize, also known as the Humboldt Research Award, is an award given by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to internationally renowned scientists and scholars.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gretchen Birbeck<\/strong>, the Edward A. and Alma Vollertsen Rykenboer Professor of Neurology, was <strong>recognized by the American Neurological Association <\/strong>with one of its 2017 scientific awards for her <strong>research on the neurological damage associated with malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/strong>\u00a0 Birbeck was recognized with the ANA\u2019s Soriano Lectureship. During her presentation, Birbeck described research to blunt neurological consequences \u2013behavioral disorders, cognitive impairment, and seizures \u2013 that can often accompany cases of pediatric cerebral malaria. Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/managedlists.ur.rochester.edu\/trk\/click?ref=zul360ron_7-1000x339c6x08891&amp;\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nick Vamivakas<\/strong>, associate professor of quantum optics and quantum physics, and <strong>Stavros Demos<\/strong>, senior scientist and Optical Materials Group leader at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, were both <a href=\"https:\/\/managedlists.ur.rochester.edu\/trk\/click?ref=zul360ron_7-1000x339c7x08891&amp;\">elected Fellows of the Optical Society<\/a> (OSA). Fellows are elected to recognize members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">\nInternational Student Engagement<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><br \/>\n&#8216;Our goal was simple: we wanted to help as many people as we could&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216102\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216102\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-216102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fea-omar-soufan-630x378.jpg\" alt=\"Omar Soufan stands in front on display of world flags\" width=\"423\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fea-omar-soufan-630x378.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fea-omar-soufan-193x117.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fea-omar-soufan-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fea-omar-soufan.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Omar Soufan \u201917 has spent two years helping his fellow Syrians recover from the trauma of his homeland\u2019s internecine civil war.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Omar Soufan &#8217;17, along with friend and classmate and Ibrahim Mohammad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/our-goal-was-simple-we-wanted-to-help-as-many-refugees-as-we-could-215892\/\">established a health clinic for refugees along Lebanon\u2019s border with Syria<\/a>. \u201cI made a promise that I was going to make a difference,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m going to keep that promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Anis Kallel: \u2018I want to make a difference\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Anis Kallel, winner of the annual Charles and Janet Forbes Entrepreneurial Competition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/anis-kallel-i-want-to-make-a-difference-242292\/\">submitted a plan for EcoFemina, which seeks to provide hygiene products for girls in developing nations<\/a>. The United Nations reports that only 43 percent of girls in impoverished nations attend secondary school, in large part because they have limited access to female hygiene products. EcoFemina has identified Tunisia as a test nation and is negotiating a deal with UNICEF to bring the products to the refugee community.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Team Meliora&#8217; builds refugee homes from recycled plastics<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_224262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224262\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-224262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/hult-1-630x378.jpg\" alt=\"Four students\" width=\"423\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/hult-1-630x378.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/hult-1-193x117.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/hult-1-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/hult-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-224262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Team Meliora, whose mission is to efficiently build homes for refugees from recycled plastics, participated in an accelerator program in Boston from late June to mid-August where they were mentored by business professors from Harvard and MIT to compete in the $1M international Hult Competition.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A team of University undergraduates was among the finalists at the Hult Prize competition. The Hult Prize is the largest social entrepreneurship competition in the world and is co-sponsored by the Hult International Business School and the Clinton Global Initiative. The team\u2019s startup company, Meliora Homes, builds homes for refugees from recycled plastics. The technology for using recycled plastics to build houses was created by the Colombian company Conceptos Pl\u00e1sticos, and already has been used in that country. Team Meliora hopes to take the technology to Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">\nInternational Faculty Engagement<\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Solving Wicked Problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_289912\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289912\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-289912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Foxe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-289912\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em> John J. Foxe, Ph.D., a nationally-regarded scientist in the field of neurobiology, is the research director of the DelMonte Neuromedicine Institute and the Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the URochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Autism. Parkinson\u2019s disease. Addiction. Fifteen percent of the world\u2019s population suffers from a major neurological disorder. Confronting these truly wicked problems demands a <a href=\"https:\/\/everbetter.rochester.edu\/2017\/10\/12\/solving-wicked-problems\/#video\">bold approach<\/a>. At the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½&#8217;s Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience, John Foxe is taking that approach. He is building teams of internationally regarded neuroscientists to help \u201cunravel the deep mysteries of the brain\u201d and ease the suffering of millions. <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=2bd323cc3cebb3aa0e433f243&amp;id=df66167726&amp;e=257b3b9fad\">Watch the video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Future of the Past: Discovering Ancient Transcripts with Gregory Heyworth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Trained as a scholar of medieval literature, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ English Professor Gregory Heyworth has become a \u201ctextual scientist.\u201d He recovers the words and images of cultural heritage objects that have been lost, through damage and erasure, to time. <a href=\"https:\/\/urochester.atavist.com\/the-future-of-the-past\">To rescue them, he and collaborators on the aptly named Lazarus Project use a transportable multispectral imaging lab<\/a>\u2014the only one in the world\u2014to make the undecipherable, and even the invisible, legible again.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Romanian professors hone entrepreneurial skills at Ain Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_270652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270652\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-270652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Romanians-at-Rush-Rhees-630x356.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Romanians-at-Rush-Rhees-630x356.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Romanians-at-Rush-Rhees-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Romanians-at-Rush-Rhees.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-270652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>For the second year in a row, six professors from Romania spent the fall semester on the River Campus at the University\u2019s Ain Center for Entrepreneurship.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/ain-center-for-entrepreneurship-selected-to-host-romanian-professor-program-over-next-three-years-164032\/\">Romanian Professor Entrepreneurship Education and Networking Program<\/a> is funded by the Romanian-American Foundation and conducted in partnership with the Fulbright Commission. The Ain Center was chosen in 2016 as the host site by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), which managed the application and selection process on behalf of the Romanian-American Foundation.\u00a0 Fifteen schools applied, and Rochester was the only one chosen.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tibet sediments reveal climate patterns from millions of years ago<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Tibetan Plateau in China experiences the strongest monsoon system on Earth, with powerful winds\u2014and accompanying intense rains in the summer months\u2014caused by a complex system of global air circulation patterns and differences in surface temperatures between land and oceans.
