Adam Fenster takes thousands of photos in his role as University photographer. The photo went on to grace the cover of the magazine\u2019s May\/June issue.<\/p>\n<p>Fenster decided to photograph the skull and other anatomically correct organs using black Plexiglas and a black backdrop for consistency, a technique he used previously on a shoot with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/pr\/Review\/V76N1\/0303_geckos.html\">leaf-tailed geckos<\/a>. \u201cI feel very fortunate to have editors that allow me to pursue independent photo stories. It\u2019s fascinating to see what our researchers are doing with cutting-edge technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Laura-Lockard.jpg\" alt=\"student athlete running on an indoor track\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Laura-Lockard.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Laura-Lockard-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Laura-Lockard-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Born to run<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urochester.atavist.com\/a-sprinters-marathon\">Laura Lockard \u201917<\/a> was participating in a brain imaging study at the University\u2019s Neuroimaging Center when the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) revealed a mass on the lower part of her brain. The scholar-athlete underwent major surgery and recovery before eventually returning to the track and field team.<\/p>\n<p>In this photo, Lockard is training in the field house at Goergen Athletic Center. \u201cIt\u2019s a panning shot, which means you set a low shutter speed that allows the background to blur and you hope to get enough detail in the subject,\u201d explains Fenster. The end result is reminiscent of a watercolor painting. In spring 2017, Fleming returned to her alma mater to teach a master class, during which she had soprano Daniela Camilleri sing through a straw to help improve her technique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be hard to get a good photo from these master classes,\u201d admits Fenster. \u201cBut Ren\u00e9e was great with the students and luckily I was able to capture this endearing moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-match-day.jpg\" alt=\"two students hugging, crying, celebrating\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-match-day.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-match-day-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-match-day-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>A match made in medical school<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest annual events in\u00a0medical schools\u00a0across the country is\u00a0Match\u00a0Day, when medical students learn where they will be placed for their residency programs. Fenster photographed School of Medicine and Dentistry students Brittany Black (left) and Leslie Anderson during this emotional and pivotal moment in their medical careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are always authentic reactions on Match Day\u2014usually tears of joy at achieving your dreams,\u201d Fenster says. \u201cMeanwhile, in the background you have other people celebrating or getting ready to embrace. Backstage at Todd Theater, director Aishwarya Krishnamoorthy \u201917 (right) worked with Tori Powers \u201918 (left) and Sara Crane \u201920 on the spring production of Sam Shepherd\u2019s <em>Buried Child<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say you\u2019re not supposed to center your subject in the photo,\u201d says Fenster. Yet he suspected this particular photo could be used effectively as a double-page spread in <em>Rochester Review<\/em> because the printed magazine\u2019s gutter space would create a symmetrical mirroring effect. That\u2019s exactly what ended up happening, and the final result is a consummate backstage dressing room shot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-College-Commencement.jpg\" alt=\"large crowd of students celebrate during commecement\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-College-Commencement.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-College-Commencement-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-College-Commencement-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Capturing commencement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Arts, Sciences and Engineering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/commencement\/2017\/college\/\">commencement ceremony<\/a> on the Eastman Quadrangle is a rite of passage for undergraduate students in the College, one that Fenster documents each May. \u201cUsually it\u2019s one of the other photographers, but this year I was the one who got the shot: the lead photo of our commencement coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image also demonstrates what photographers call \u201clayering,\u201d a technique where they fill the frame\u2014from left to right, front to back, top to bottom\u2014so the entire image tells a story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Erie-canal-barge.jpg\" alt=\"barge moving up the Erie Canal, carrying large tanks\" width=\"1000\" height=\"808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Erie-canal-barge.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Erie-canal-barge-630x509.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Erie-canal-barge-768x621.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>225 miles on the Erie Canal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Genesee Brewing Company, based in Rochester, is one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in the nation. As part of a modernization project, the company had several 60-foot-tall fermentation tanks shipped from Albany to Rochester on the Erie Canal.<\/p>\n<p>Fenster waited on the Moore Road bridge near the River Campus in Genesee Valley Park and photographed the barge en route to its destination using\u2014appropriately enough\u2014a fish-eye lens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-MAG-Sanborn-sculpture.jpg\" alt=\"outdoor exhibit at Memorial Art Gallery, with words projected in light onto the building\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-MAG-Sanborn-sculpture.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-MAG-Sanborn-sculpture-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-MAG-Sanborn-sculpture-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Light bright<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In June, the Memorial Art Gallery debuted \u201cArgentum: Double-Positive,\u201d a new light sculpture by Jim Sanborn. The installation features two perforated bronze cylinders that light up at night and project text onto the fa\u00e7ade and surrounding landscape at MAG.<\/p>\n<p>Fenster recalls spending time securing access to the rooftop of the apartments across from MAG, initially thinking the best shots would come from a higher angle. Instead, his favorite shots were taken \u201clow and close\u201d during the blue hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographers talk about the golden hour and blue hour,\u201d explains Fenster. \u201cBlue hour occurs during twilight when the sky is deep blue for a few minutes, but there is still some ambient light reaching your subject. This is a bit late in the blue hour, but if you wait any longer it all goes to black\u2014and the sky is a key element in this photo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-PA-fireflies.jpg\" alt=\"streaks of light made from fireflies at night in the woods\" width=\"1000\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-PA-fireflies.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-PA-fireflies-630x361.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-PA-fireflies-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Spread your wings and fly, firefly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fenster jumped at the chance to accompany Rochester biologists conducting field research along Tionesta Creek in Pennsylvania. \u201cThere aren\u2019t too many other locations in the world where you can see this kind of firefly activity and this many species. It was magical.\u201d The researchers went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/firefly-researchers-mapping-worlds-second-most-interesting-genome-269372\/\">sequence the genome<\/a> of the Big Dipper firefly while learning more about the genes that produce the firefly\u2019s characteristic flashes of light.<\/p>\n<p>This image is a composite of multiple exposures layered on top of each other, a photography technique Fenster was able to try for the first time as part of this assignment. \u201cThis photo was gratifying because it turned out the way I\u2019d envisioned, helped tell the story, and I learned something through the process of making it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Warner-Horizons.jpg\" alt=\"child playing under a colorful parachute\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Warner-Horizons.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Warner-Horizons-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Warner-Horizons-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>New horizons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Each summer, K\u20138 students from the Rochester City School District participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.rochester.edu\/researchprojects\/projects\/Horizon\">Horizons at Warner<\/a>. The six-week summer enrichment program offers instruction in reading and math, mentoring and a ninth-grade job skills program, workshops for parents, and family events year round.<\/p>\n<p>Here, the narrowing panels of the backlit parachute draw your eye toward the subject. \u201cKids are always fun to photograph because they\u2019re not self-conscious. They just get lost in their play,\u201d Fenster says. While the playfulness of this photo seems to belie the seriousness of the program\u2019s efforts, Fenster believes a photographer\u2019s job is to find the best visuals to illustrate the larger story. \u201cIf an image like this is what makes people stop and read the piece, then we\u2019ve succeeded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Gateways-rehearsals.jpg\" alt=\"musicians practicing cello backstage\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Gateways-rehearsals.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Gateways-rehearsals-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-Gateways-rehearsals-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Front and back<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fenster photographed Eastman School alumnus Thapelo Masita \u201917 in a \u201cnice, intimate moment\u201d warming up on the cello backstage at Kodak Hall before a rehearsal for this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/urochester.atavist.com\/a-musical-feast\">Gateways Music Festival<\/a>. The festival brings together classical musicians of African descent for a week of workshops and free performances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like this photo because there are two things going on: You have this discrete backstage area, and then another musician leads you onstage and to the front of house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-solar-eclipse.jpg\" alt=\"partial solar eclipse behind clouds\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-solar-eclipse.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-solar-eclipse-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-solar-eclipse-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Partial eclipse of the sun<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The great American eclipse\u2014during which the moon blocked out all or parts of the sun\u2014occurred on Friday, August 21. Although Rochester was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/see-partial-solar-eclipse-rochester-262942\/\">not in the path of totality<\/a>, viewers still convened on the River Campus to witness this rare astronomical event. Passing clouds obscured the eclipse at times, but also enabled Fenster take this shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best pictures I ended up getting of the eclipse itself were <em>because of<\/em> the clouds, which make the shot more interesting. He snapped over 3,000 photos with the above being his top shot. Taken from a single-engine Cessna aircraft, the photo shows downtown Rochester in all its glory during the elusive blue hour. Fenster was inspired by the work of photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laforetair.com\/galleries.php\">Vincent Laforet<\/a>, who uses the latest in camera technology to depict nighttime city streets that end up looking like circuit boards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-287892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-bionic-eye.jpg\" alt=\"large group of surgeons in operating room, with surgery visible on small computer monitor\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-bionic-eye.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-bionic-eye-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-bionic-eye-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Putting the \u201ceye\u201d in bionic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A URMC team implanted an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secondsight.com\/g-the-argus-ii-prosthesis-system-pf-en.html\">Argus II retinal prosthesis<\/a>, or \u201cbionic eye,\u201d into the right eye of a patient earlier this month. The three-hour procedure was the second of its kind ever undertaken at the Medical Center. It was also a rare opportunity for Fenster to document the action in an operating room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis photo ties back to the first in this series,\u201d notes Fenster. Although radically different in terms of style, \u201cboth show how our researchers are using the latest technology to advance the medical field.\u201d The image also reminds Fenster of the <a href=\"http:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/accidental-renaissance\">Accidental Renaissance meme<\/a>, in which modern photographs feature compositions similar to those of Renaissance paintings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, J.
