In 12 years, it\u2019s become a pretty big umbrella.<\/p>\n<p>The center has grown from just two programs to several that give undergraduates and graduate students an opportunity to engage and learn outside the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/service\/leap\/index.html\">LEAP<\/a>, which enlists undergraduates in tutoring kindergarten through third grade students to develop the language, literacy, math, and social skills;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/service\/ryy.html\">Rochester Youth Year<\/a>, which places recent graduates of Rochester-area colleges in community-based organizations, where they help create or expand initiatives that address various challenges facing local youth and families;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/service\/tour\/current.html\">Transition Opportunities at the URochester (TOUR)<\/a>, partnership between the RCCL, the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.rochester.edu\/researchprojects\/projects\/IIT\">Institute for Innovative Transition<\/a> and the regional organization Monroe One BOCES that provides access to a college experience for adults 18 to 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/service\/urbanfellows\/index.html\">Urban Fellows<\/a>, a 10-week summer program for University students and Rochester natives who attend college elsewhere to immerse themselves in an outreach project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_273742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-273742\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-273742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/LEAP_2016.jpg\" alt=\"young woman helping child with a map\" width=\"400\" height=\"358\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-273742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mahima Joshi &#8217;19 tutors Nhariyel Fuqua, a student at Paul Road School in Gates, as part of the RCCL&#8217;s LEAP program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are several others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrograms like these are important to students\u2019 education,\u201d says Glenn Cerosaletti \u201991, \u201903 (MA), director of the center. \u201cThey gain leadership and career skills, obtain an appreciation of diversity, and, hopefully, learn to be involved and engaged members of their community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RCCL also oversees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/first-year-students-fan-across-community-wilson-day\/\">Wilson Day<\/a>, established in 1988 as an annual day of community service for first-year students to perform tasks in the city of Rochester such as painting, landscaping, and classroom preparation. It\u2019s the oldest community service day among colleges in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the center runs leadership development programs including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/leadership\/programs\/medallion\/leadership-society.html\">Medallion Leadership Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/leadership\/education\/risingleaderclass.html\">Rising Leader Class<\/a> as initiatives to promote research in the community, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/community-engaged-scholars.html\">Citation in Community-Engaged Scholarship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re seeking to integrate students&#8217; academic pursuits with community-based experiences to contextualize their learning and benefit the community,&#8221; Cerosaletti says.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Lattimore Hall within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/odos\/\">Office of the Dean of Students<\/a>, the RCCL was established by former dean of students Jody Asbury, who also was a driving force behind the creation of Wilson Day. Hundreds of students have been engaged, educated\u2014and affected\u2014by their participation in RCCL programs.<\/p>\n<p>One of those students is Ori Yehezkely \u201918, a psychology major from Miami who is president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/organization\/iclc\">Inter-Class Living Community<\/a> and served as Wilson Day coordinator in August 2017. It\u2019s a 180-degree turn from her freshman year, when she was \u201coverwhelmed\u201d by her adjustments to college life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t ready to engage with the community,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/news\/community-engagement\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-277062\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bug-community-engagement.jpg\" alt=\"Community Connections: A Newscenter series highlighting the ties between the University and its communities.\" width=\"450\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>In her sophomore year, however, she joined Urban Fellows, working at a city farmers market while attending community events and learning about urban education, crime prevention, health, housing, and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to meet incredible change-makers in the community and was inspired by their love of their community,\u201d she says. \u201cI now see Rochester through a different lens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s helped her recognize and develop her leadership skills. \u201cThe RCCL provided me with the push and support I needed to really put myself out there in the community,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve become more service-minded and fully intend to pursue service after I graduate, and stay active in whatever community I end up at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College, says students involved in RCCL programs receive an education outside of the classroom\u2014and often, away from campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a really good thing, and something we can really take advantage of with our open curriculum,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about us giving. We can learn a lot. It\u2019s an opportunity for students to get out there and learn alongside people in the community.
