John Covach, director of the Institute for Popular Music<\/a><\/strong>, marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles\u2019 iconic album Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/em> with an op-ed piece in Newsweek<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which declares few other bands\u2014 in the summer of 1967\u2014could have released such a musically adventurous and experimental album.<\/p>\n

In the pop-music world before Pepper<\/em>, it was considered crucial for any artist to have a distinctive signature sound. For singers, it was usually a combination of the quality of the voice, the manner of delivery, and the selection of material. For bands, the list might also include particular instrumental sounds and textures.<\/p>\n

Listening to Sgt. Pepper<\/em> tracks such as \u201cShe\u2019s Leaving Home,\u201d \u201cA Little Help from My Friends,\u201d \u201cBeing for the Benefit of Mr. Kite\u201d and \u201cWithin You Without You,\u201d however, does not give the sense of a single trademark sound. We hear those wildly contrasting tracks as Beatles songs now, but if we had never heard of the Beatles before, would they sound like they came from the same group?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Covach is coauthor of What\u2019s That Sound: An Introduction to Rock and Its History<\/em>. He has written extensively on twentieth-century music, popular music, and the philosophy of music in numerous books and journals.<\/p>\n
