There were 15 unique nominations submitted, and nearly 400 votes from Rochester undergraduates. The winners were introduced at the Undergraduate Research Expo in the Hawkins Carlson Room at Rush Rhees Library in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are professors who go above and beyond their role as faculty members and enrich the undergraduate experience,\u201d outgoing SA President Vito Martino \u201917 says.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-246162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/John-Givens.jpg\" alt=\"John Givens\" width=\"333\" height=\"600\" \/><em>Humanities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>John Givens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An associate professor of Russian and chair of the Department of Modern Languages &amp; Cultures, Givens received his doctoral degree from the University of Washington in 1993 and joined the Rochester faculty the same year.<\/p>\n<p>The Baker City, Oregon, native focuses on Russian literature and cinema and recently completed a book titled <em>The Image of Christ in Russian Literature.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeaching UR students is one of the most challenging and rewarding things I do,\u201d Givens says. \u201cMy students are wonderful. They remind me every day of the Russian saying, \u2018In teaching, we learn.\u2019 I learn from them as much as they do from me, and I thank them for pushing me to be the best teacher I can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tanveer Karim \u201917 nominated Givens and presented his award.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"lighter\">\u201cHe has not only been an amazing academic adviser, but he also has been an extremely helpful mentor throughout my undergraduate career. As a recent immigrant to the United States, I felt quite out of place, but he was there to offer constructive feedback and make me feel part of the community.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-246172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/kalyanimadhu.jpg\" alt=\"Kalyani Madhu\" width=\"333\" height=\"600\" \/><em>Natural science and engineering<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Kalyani Madhu \u201911(PhD)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A lecturer in mathematics and assistant director of undergraduate studies in the math department, Madhu joined the University in 2012. The Rochester native studied English at Cornell, earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in the subject in 1984, before switching to mathematics. Her research interest is arithmetic dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very, very pleased to receive this award,\u201d Madhu says. \u201cTeaching is important to me. I find it rewarding, and I\u2019m happy that my students feel I\u2019ve been doing a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ziqing Jin \u201917 nominated Madhu and presented the award.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"lighter\">\u201cHer class is well organized, easy to understand, and useful,\u201d says Jin, a mathematics and financial economics dual major. \u201cShe is very patient and extends her office hours when students have problems understanding the material. She not only teaches well, she cares about her students.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-246182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Michael-Rizzo.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Rizzo\" width=\"333\" height=\"600\" \/><em>Social sciences<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Michael Rizzo<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>A lecturer in economics, Rizzo joined the University in 2008. The Queens, New York, native focuses on the economics of higher education and environmental economics. He graduated from Amherst College in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe joy of investigating how the social world works for a living is one thing,\u201d Rizzo says. \u201cIt\u2019s entirely another thing to see the enthusiasm with which our students use these investigations and attendant insights in all aspects of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leif Johansen \u201920 nominated Rizzo and presented him with the award.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"lighter\">\u201cHe\u2019s not only brilliant in his field, he genuinely cares about his students, endlessly making time to have intellectual discussions with them in and out of class,\u201d Johansen says. \u201cHe teaches people to ask big questions.\u201d<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three faculty members have been named Students\u2019
