{"id":242262,"date":"2017-05-03T13:08:22","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T17:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=242262"},"modified":"2017-05-16T17:03:45","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T21:03:45","slug":"charlisa-goodlet-an-advocate-for-diversity-community-242262","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/charlisa-goodlet-an-advocate-for-diversity-community-242262\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlisa Goodlet: An advocate for diversity, community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WQIHEZ80XY0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As a Rochester resident, Charlisa Goodlet has been passionate about strengthening ties between University students and the greater Rochester community.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, she\u2019s worked to build a closer relationship with the 19th Ward, the racially and economically diverse city neighborhood just across the Genesee from the River Campus. A native of Rochester, Goodlet moved with her family to the ward in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>She believes that a successful integration of University students and local residents ultimately rests on community programming. She cites community gardens, neighborhood forums, and initiatives such as Wall\\Therapy\u2014a Rochester organization that advertises itself as an \u201cart and community intervention project\u201d\u2014as examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/commencement\/2017\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright grow size-full wp-image-245632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/class-of-2017-slug.png\" alt=\"graphic reads CLASS OF 2017\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" style=\"border:none;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/sba\/\">Susan B. Anthony Center <\/a><\/strong>at the University awarded Goodlet the 2015 Dean Ruth A. Merrill Award, a leadership prize awarded to an undergraduate woman from the Greater Rochester region who is an ardent advocate for the Rochester region.<\/p>\n<p>On campus, she\u2019s held leadership positions in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/organization\/blackstudentsunion\/about\">Black Students\u2019 Union<\/a><\/strong> and as a cocaptain of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/organization\/xclusivestepteam\">Xclusive Step Team<\/a><\/strong>. She\u2019s been a member of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/organization\/nodisclaimers\">No Disclaimers<\/a><\/strong> spoken-word group.<\/p>\n<p>Goodlet served for two years as president of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/organization\/dlh\/about\">Douglass Leadership House<\/a><\/strong>. DLH, founded in 2012 and named for the abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass, \u201caims to celebrate and raise awareness of the many facets of the black experience, including its culture, politics, history, and diasporic roots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working for the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/diversity\/\"> Office of Faculty Development and Diversity<\/a><\/strong> and the political science department helped her refine her career interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve looked at 10 years of data for the University and tried to figure out how we can increase faculty diversity,\u201d she says. \u201cWe know that the number of minority students going into faculty work is low, so how can we get students of color to actually pursue the pipeline of becoming a faculty member?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graduating with a degree in political science and African-American studies, Goodlet says she wants to be a political scientist, lawyer, and writer focusing on race relations, race, and ethnic politics.<\/p>\n<p>After a summer internship at a think tank in Washington, D.C., Goodlet will pursue a master\u2019s degree in political science or Africana studies at SUNY Albany before working toward a law degree.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also proud to be a first-generation college student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do see myself as a role model for others,\u201d Goodlet says. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m perfect. I don\u2019t think that I have all the answers, but I\u2019m a work in progress just like any human being.
