A survey put out by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/careercenter\/\">University\u2019s Gwen M. Greene \u00a0Career and Internship Center<\/a><\/strong>, along with data from other sources, showed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The average salary is $56,000.<\/li>\n<li>Ninety percent are either working or continuing their education.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019ve been hired by major companies like Apple, Goldman Sachs, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst &amp; Young, General Motors, and Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased with the results,\u201d says Vanessa Newton, director of assessment data and operations at the Career Center. \u201cIt really says a lot about the URochester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/news\/unlocking-big-data\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-220142 size-full\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/dandelion-data-science-logo.jpg\" alt=\"illustration of dandelion with data as seeds\" width=\"400\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lighter\">Unlocking big data<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"lighter\">A Newscenter series on how Rochester is using data science to change how we research, how we learn, and how we understand our world.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It also says a lot about the important role that data science is playing in the University\u2019s efforts to connect students with potential employers.<\/p>\n<p>When Joe Testani took over as executive director of the Career Center two years ago, his goal was to hire someone with an expertise in analyzing data that would benefit students and prospective employers. Last July, he brought in Newton, who was a program analyst at the University of Kansas\u2019s career center. \u201cNow, we have someone creating dashboards and syncing data,\u201d Testani says. \u201cWe can determine who\u2019s seeing us,\u201d he adds, referring to the Career Center website, as well as \u201cwhat kinds of students are seeing us and how often, and how many alumni are we engaging. It\u2019s a big part of what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newton uses Tableau, a Seattle-based software company that produces interactive data visualization products focused on business intelligence. The information, which is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/careercenter\/about\/outcomes\/index.html\">public and available on the Career Center\u2019s website<\/a><\/strong>, shows\u00a0the first destinations of the Class of 2016 and\u00a0helps\u00a0the University, current and prospective\u00a0students, as well as employers\u00a0to better understand what can be done with a Rochester education.<\/p>\n<p>A student or alumnus \u201ccan go online and see that, just because you have an English degree or a psychology degree, it doesn\u2019t mean you have to work for a certain company,\u201d Newton says.<\/p>\n<p>She compiles her data by sending surveys to recent University graduates, consulting with faculty and staff, gathering information supplied by the National Student Clearinghouse (a nonprofit organization that tracks data on graduates who are continuing their education), and checking student profiles on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to make better decisions utilizing data,\u201d Newton says. \u201cFor example, we know that 25 percent of recent graduates have stayed in the Rochester area. The technology company has hired at least 10 Rochester graduates.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The data is also helpful for companies who contact the Career Center looking to recruit students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can tell them what a competitive offer is,\u201d Newton says.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important information for parents of undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see that going here pays off,\u201d she adds. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge investment, and parents want to know that there will be a return on that investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a perfect system. Of the 637 graduates who are working, fewer than 200 reported their salary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need graduates to be filling out the survey,\u201d Newton says. \u201cMy hope is that, once they see how helpful our data is, they\u2019ll want to be part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the average salary of a recent graduate from a four-year institution is $50,000, making Rochester above average. One reason for the impressive salary figure is the University has established programs in fast-developing (and high-paying) fields such as data science. The new <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/\">Georgen Institute for Data Science <\/a><\/strong>oversees a major as well as a master\u2019s degree program in the field. In the fall of 2015, 26 graduate students and 30 undergraduates enrolled. So far, demand for graduates is greater than supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had more contacts with alumni that are in recruiting positions or at companies wanting to hire data science students than we have with students themselves,\u201d Testani says.<\/p>\n<p>One major company that keeps knocking on the University\u2019s door is 1010data, a New York-based company dedicated to big-data discovery and data sharing. The company president is Greg Munves \u201904, who majored in economics and eagerly recruits Rochester graduates. He\u2019s hired 10, including two from the Class of 2016.
