  {"id":199942,"date":"2016-11-30T13:36:30","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T18:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=199942"},"modified":"2017-05-17T17:14:32","modified_gmt":"2017-05-17T21:14:32","slug":"cast-reflects-on-circle-mirror-transformation-199942","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/cast-reflects-on-circle-mirror-transformation-199942\/","title":{"rendered":"Cast reflects on <em>Circle Mirror Transformation<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the International Theatre Program brings its last production of the semester, Annie Baker&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circle Mirror Transformation,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Todd Union stage, cast and crew members say the character-driven play has offered an unusual opportunity for reflection on their own lives, on and off the stage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drama, directed by guest artist Pirronne Yousefzadeh and set in small-town Vermont, chronicles the interactions, emotions, and desires of five people in an acting class. Through theater games and acting exercises, the characters reveal their unique stories and form relationships with one another. With its pinpoint focus on a single classroom, the play allows the audience to become intimately connected to the characters and their inner turmoils. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student cast and crew, a mixture of rookies and veterans, share some of the insights they\u2019ve gained in working on the production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201852\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-201852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ian-von-fange.jpg\" alt=\"Ian Von Fange\" width=\"151\" height=\"197\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University photo \/ Brandon Vick.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Ian E.W. Von Fange \u201917 as <\/b><b><i>Schultz<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ian E.W. Von Fange \u201917 says his life as a student at Rochester has gone well. A creative writing major who has been acting for more than 14 years, he has performed in three productions at Todd Union, plays drums, and writes poetry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Von Fange&#8217;s character, Schultz, is much older\u2014and he\u2019s had a rough time of late. He\u2019s in his late forties, and after being married for more than 20 years, has recently gone through a divorce. Schultz is, as Von Fange describes him, \u201ca really genuinely good-hearted guy who just has a lot of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Von Fange says that portraying a character who has undergone experiences far beyond what he can personally comprehend has been one of the challenges and benefits of performing in\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circle Mirror Transformation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s what has made discovering and shaping Schultz\u2019s character so rewarding,\u201d he says. \u201cHe\u2019s human, and sometimes he triumphs and sometimes he fails.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Von Fange hopes to pursue a career in acting and writing in New York City. But while Rabenold has yet to experience any serious setbacks, Theresa, 35, struggled to find work in New York City before picking up and moving to Vermont. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rabenold says that she and Theresa share a drive to perform and an enthusiasm to work\u2014and that one of the biggest challenges of portraying Theresa is discovering the ways they are different. She overcomes that challenge by drawing on Theresa\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheresa is older than I am and has more life experience to draw on,\u201d Rabenold says. &#8220;So inventing all the things she has gone through over the years is a big part of my process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since beginning at the University, Rabenold, a double major in mathematics and political science, has performed in four International Theatre productions, and with The Opposite of People (TOOP), a River Campus theater company that\u2019s entirely student run. She is also involved in the Students\u2019 Association, Ballet Performance Group, and Kappa Alpha Theta. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201712\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-201712\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Murie-Gillett-473x630.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of Murie Gillett\" width=\"151\" height=\"204\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Murie Gillett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Murie Gillett \u201920 as <\/b><b><i>Marty<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murie Gillett \u201820 plays the role of a teacher not only through her character, Marty, but in her own life as well. Marty is the encouraging, caring instructor of the acting class that\u2019s at the center of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circle Mirror Transformation. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillet is a history and English double major working towards her certificates in English secondary education and Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the Warner School of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theater has helped her become not only a stronger actress, but a better teacher. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have become more able to command a room and create and execute engaging lessons,\u201d she says. \u201cAs an English and TESOL teacher, I think that incorporating theater into my classroom will help my students to develop better communication skills.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillett has participated in four International Theatre productions. She\u2019s also acted in four plays with the student-run theater company, The Opposite of People, and is the group\u2019s artistic director; and has served as a writing fellow in the Writing, Speaking, and Argument program. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199962\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-199962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/unnamed.png\" alt=\"unnamed\" width=\"135\" height=\"192\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Carrie Daniela Shapiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Carrie Daniela Shapiro \u201920 as <\/b><b><i>Lauren<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freshman Carrie Daniela Shapiro \u201920 sees herself as a clear reflection of her character, Lauren. Just as Shapiro is making her debut on the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ stage, her character, Lauren, 16, is a young actress excited about developing her acting skills. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren\u2014whom Shapiro views as a younger version of April Ludgate from the comedy television show <i>Parks and Recreation<\/i>\u2014is by far the youngest student in the acting class at the center of <em>Circle Mirror Transformation<\/em>. Similarly, Shapiro says she&#8217;s been more than 30 years younger than some of her peers in her own improv classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I love about <em>Circle Mirror Transformation<\/em> is how much goes on that is never said or written in the script,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a very \u2018feely\u2019 play.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapiro is \u00a0a member of the Student Association of Vegan and Vegetarian Youth (SAVVY) and the pan-African dance team,\u00a0Ma\u2019Frisah. She also plays intramural soccer.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201702\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-201702\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Casey-Brentnall-e1480436226257-512x630.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of Casey Brentnall\" width=\"151\" height=\"194\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Casey Brentnall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Casey Brentnall \u201920 as <\/b><b><i>James <\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Von Fange, freshman Casey Brentnall \u201920 has had the difficult task of portraying a character whose life experience is vastly different from his own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His character, James, is divorced, middle-aged, and has been remarried, to Marty. He has a daughter from his previous marriage from whom he\u2019s become estranged. He\u2019s moved from place to place, and simply desires \u201cto have the people he wants back in his life,\u201d says Brentnall.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brentnall says the role has been a challenge in multiple domains. He\u2019s had to learn\u00a0to hold himself in a way that makes him appear much more mature and experienced than he feels. He\u2019s had to bring James to life through words and symbolic gestures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe show is incredibly realistic and minute, and so much of the story is told through simple acting exercises and tiny details,\u201d Brentnall says. \u201cIt makes it feel very life-like, but also creates a big challenge for me as an actor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Rabenold and Gillett, Brentnall is a member of the student-run theater company, The Opposite of People. When asked about what role he hopes theater will play in his life, he says, \u201cI plan to continue acting at least as a hobby. But obviously, the dream is to be able to support yourself with your passion. As the student director, Krupkin, a theatre major, is what she describes as \u201ca second pair of eyes for the director.\u201d In addition to helping and advising the cast, she spends much of her time working on dramaturgy, compiling resources and information about the play to ensure its historical and situational accuracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started acting when I was 11 back home in New Hampshire at a place called Andy\u2019s Summer Playhouse, and I\u2019ve had the theater bug ever since,\u201d she says. \u201cMy interest in directing really blossomed after I stage managed there for two years.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krupkin says each actor plays a unique part and offers a different mood to the stage.
