{"id":174702,"date":"2016-08-05T12:21:09","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T16:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=174702"},"modified":"2016-08-05T12:25:41","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T16:25:41","slug":"upward-bound-students-showcase-work-at-closing-ceremony-174702","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/upward-bound-students-showcase-work-at-closing-ceremony-174702\/","title":{"rendered":"Upward Bound students showcase work at closing ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before he enrolled in the University\u2019s Upward Bound program last summer, Derek McNeil\u2019s knowledge of chemistry was \u201cthe bare minimum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew the periodic table and the basics you learn about chemistry,\u201d says McNeil, a senior at Vanguard Collegiate High School in Rochester. \u201cBut with this program, everything came together. Now, I feel like a real scientist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNeil is one of a record 140 high school students from the Rochester City School District who took part in Upward Bound&#8217;s six-week summer program. Upward Bound is an academic and college preparatory program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its purpose is to help students develop the skills and motivation necessary to complete high school, become active community members, and succeed in college.<\/p>\n<p>Administered by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/kearnscenter\/\">David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Arts, Science and Engineering<\/a><\/strong>, the University\u2019s Upward Bound program was created in 2007. \u00a0The program is part of a larger initiative to engage underrepresented, first-generation, and economically challenged high schoolers throughout the Greater Rochester Area in pursuing education in college.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the 2016 summer participants made poster and oral presentations in Hubbell Auditorium at the program\u2019s annual academic showcase.<\/p>\n<p>All Upward Bound students perform research, but McNeil was one of just six who worked with faculty in University labs. His project was titled \u201cStraightforward Syntheses of Fe (III) Chelate Complexes and their X-Ray Crystal Structures.\u201d His job was to synthesize and determine the crystal structures of new iron complexes.<\/p>\n<p>He did it so well that his mentor, assistant chemistry professor Michael Neidig, told McNeil that his work may be published in a research journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is amazing,\u201d McNeil says. \u201cThat makes me feel so good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old says taking the program the past two summers has pointed him on a career path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is now what I want to do with my life,\u201d he says. \u201cUpward Bound offers inner-city students an opportunity they otherwise wouldn\u2019t find. It\u2019s amazing to mix and experiment and do research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lavasha Perez, a junior at Wilson Magnet High, is taking the Upward Bound program for a third consecutive summer and also performed research in Neidig\u2019s lab. Her project was called \u201cSynthesis of Iron (II) Complexes Bearing a Nitrogen-Based Ligand.\u201d She studied how iron behaves in reactions which create chemical bonds between two carbon atoms to produce more complex molecules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend this program 100 percent,\u201d Perez says. \u201cI used to be really shy. This program made me more talkative. I can talk to anyone I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neidig says chemistry may be complex, but the goal of his Upward Bound classes is quite simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about making science cool for these kids,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re having fun and doing research on a daily basis, you learn. And you often find you love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t all about science Thursday morning. Student presentations covered topics such as cyberbullying, safe sex, teen suicide prevention, climate change and stopping inner-city violence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;With this program, everything came together.
