Over the years, Rochester and Eastman School of Music alumni have taken home Broadway&#8217;s top honors, and University students have had the opportunity to work with Tony Award winners on stage and behind the scenes. Here are a few of Rochester&#8217;s connections to the Tony Awards.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/\/www.rochester.edu\/arts\/theater.html\"><strong>2016-17 schedule of University theater productions<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>1.<em> BYE BYE BIRDIE<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>One of America\u2019s most successful musical theater composers and three-time Tony Award winner is Eastman alumnus Charles Strouse \u201947E. With a repertoire of more than 30 written scores, his most popular compositions come from the musicals\u00a0<em>Annie<\/em> and <em>Bye Bye Birdie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166262\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-166262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/abbot_headshot_300.jpg\" alt=\"Mr. Broadway: George Abbott, Class of 1911\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Broadway: George Abbott, Class of 1911<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>2. MR. BROADWAY<\/h3>\n<p>George Abbott, Class of 1911, was known as \u201cMr. Broadway.\u201d As a writer, director, or producer he was involved in productions that earned 40 Tony Awards. He won the award for Best Musical for <em>The Pajama Game<\/em> (1955), <em>Damn Yankees<\/em> (1956), and <em>Fiorello!<\/em> (1960), which also earned him a Tony for Best Director (and a Pulitzer Prize). He also won for Best Direction in 1963 for <em>A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.<\/em> In 1976, he received a Special Tony Award, The Lawrence Langer Award, and in 1987, he received a second Special Tony Award in celebration of his 100th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. TONY AWARDS HAT TRICK<\/h3>\n<p>Douglas Besterman \u201985, a recipient of three Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, has worked with some of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, including Mel Brooks whose Broadway hit show <em>The Producers<\/em> gave Besterman his second Tony win in 2001.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165792\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165792\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/eurydice-2006.jpg\" alt=\"performer on stage\" width=\"468\" height=\"311\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The International Theatre Program&#8217;s 2006 production of <em>Eurydice<\/em>, with lighting design by Tony award nominee Ben Stanton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>4. and 5. LEADING LIGHTS<\/h3>\n<p>Justin Townsend, who is nominated for this year\u2019s Best Lighting Design of Play for <em>The Humans <\/em>and Best Lighting Design of a Musical for <em>American Psycho<\/em>, designed the lights for the International Theatre Program\u2019s production <em>Major Barbara<\/em> by George Bernard Shaw in 2005, and created the scenic and lighting design for the program\u2019s first musical <em>Hello Again <\/em>by Michael John La Chiusa, in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Stanton, who is nominated for this year\u2019s Best Lighting Design of a Musical for <em>Spring Awakening<\/em>, designed the lights for the International Theatre Program\u2019s <em>Eurydice<\/em> by Sarah Ruhl in 2006.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>6.<\/strong> THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>James Lowe \u201989E was a conductor for the first national tour of the Tony Award-winning show, <em>The Light in the Piazza<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>7. PROLIFIC PRODUCER<\/h3>\n<p><em>An American in Paris<\/em>, which won four Tony Awards in 2015, was produced by Jane Dubin \u201979 (MS), president of Double Play Connections, whose other Tony Award-winning productions include <em>Ann<\/em> and <em>Peter the Starcatcher<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>8. A MUSICAL <em>MADISON COUNTY<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Jason Robert Brown \u201991E, who won a Tony Award in 1999 for the musical <em>Parade<\/em>, also won\u00a0Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for the musical adaptation of the best-selling novel, <em>The Bridges of Madison County<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>9. LOTTE LENYA CONNECTIONS<\/h3>\n<p>Kim Kowalke, professor of musicology at the Eastman School of Music and professor of music in the College&#8217;s Department of Music, is the CEO and president of the Kurt Weill Foundation, which brings Tony Award nominees and winners to Rochester annually to participate in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kwf.org\/pages\/lotte-lenya-competition.html\">Lotte Lenya Competition.<\/a> Past winners include Lauren Worsham, who received a Tony nomination in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-165582 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/mcdonald-workshop.jpg\" alt=\"student poses in front of poster of Audra McDonald\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>10. WORKSHOPPING WITH THEATER ROYALTY<\/h3>\n<p>Elizana-Marie Joseph \u201917, a student in the River Campus Music Department\u2019s Musical Theater Workshop, had the opportunity to meet six-time Tony Award-winning actress Audra McDonald when she performed in Rochester with the Rochester Philharmonic
