{"id":123872,"date":"2015-10-12T11:19:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T15:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=123872"},"modified":"2016-02-25T09:39:26","modified_gmt":"2016-02-25T14:39:26","slug":"institute-for-popular-music-pays-tribute-to-american-rock-123872","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/institute-for-popular-music-pays-tribute-to-american-rock-123872\/","title":{"rendered":"Institute for Popular Music pays tribute to American rock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s Institute for Popular Music kicks off its 2015-2016 \u201cIn Performance\u201d series on Saturday, Oct. 17, with a tribute concert to American rock music.<\/p>\n<p>1965 marks the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of what rock historians, like John Covach, consider to be one of the most progressive years in the history of rock music.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bznoaWa5-FY\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn early 1964, the music industry in America was taken by storm by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/image-is-everything-was-marketing-key-to-the-success-of-the-rolling-stones-93212\/\">four lads from Liverpool<\/a>, which paved the way for the British Invasion,\u201d said Covach, director of the University\u2019s Institute for Popular Music and the newly created Institute for Performing Arts. \u201cSo in 1965 musicians in the U.S. responded with the creation of new genres of music by new artists like Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, and Sonny and Cher.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate this milestone in music history, a special tribute concert will take place on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. in Strong Auditorium featuring Rochester\u2019s classic &#8217;60s rock band, the Smooth Talkers, along with faculty and students from the University\u2019s Department of Music.
