Rochester Monday this semester

A reminder that the spring 2026 semester will feature Rochester Monday, which will occur on the first Friday of the semester. That means on Friday, January 23, University faculty will teach their Monday classes, so students should attend their regularly scheduled Monday classes that day. The introduction of Rochester Monday is part of an update to the academic calendar that better aligns holidays and other events across University schools throughout the year.

You can find more information on the University Academic Calendar. There will not be a make-up day for the Friday classes that fall on Rochester Monday. There is simply one less Friday in the term than the other days of the week.

Please note that the School of Medicine and Dentistry (MD only), the School of Nursing, the Warner School of Education, and the Eastman Institute for Oral Health will not participate in the Rochester Monday. Students attending those schools should attend their regular Friday classes.

Course materials selection through UR Essentials

All full-time, matriculated undergraduate students should have recently received an email from Barnes & Noble confirming their courses and method of course material delivery. Follow the instructions to ensure you have your materials for the start of classes. The University’s UR Essentials program will provide all your required textbooks and course materials at the start of the semester. Instead of buying books separately, the cost is covered through tuition. Physical books will be bundled for easy pickup at the bookstore, and digital materials . Continue to monitor your email for updates from the bookstore; you may receive multiple emails as course changes and material additions are processed, so be sure to confirm each one.

Discover the new Experiential Learning Principles

Students are invited to learn about the University’s newly developed Experiential Learning Principles, created by a faculty workgroup from across all schools to provide a shared foundation for hands-on learning. These principles are designed to help you better understand and navigate the many experiential opportunities available at the University. Your input and engagement are vital as the University moves toward a more cohesive and intentional approach to experiential learning and your success.

Information sessions will be offered in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, or via Zoom on January 27 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and January 28 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Email jwren@ur.rochester.edu to receive the Zoom link.

Diploma Release Policy reminder

Effective January 11, the University resumed withholding diplomas for students with an unpaid past-due balance of $100 or more owed to the University. This policy is reflected in the Student Financial Responsibility Agreement completed before enrolling in spring 2026 courses. This policy does not impact graduation, and students will still be able to receive their official transcripts verifying that they have earned their degree. For questions about past due balances, contact the Bursar’s Office. For all other related questions, contact the University Registrar.

Grad school savings for graduating seniors

The University is offering a minimum 40 percent tuition award for eligible Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ undergraduate seniors who are admitted to participating master’s programs beginning in fall 2026. This award is available exclusively to Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ students and cannot be combined with other scholarships or tuition waivers. .
